That’s pretty neat, them being converted to .45 colt. From what I’ve read, your friend wasn’t unreasonable to be wary of .45 colt lever actions because of the pre-upgrade .45 colt’s complete unsuitability for lever action carbines. I don’t have a date for when .45 colt was upgraded and standardized to have a larger rim that’s in line with other rimmed pistol cartridges suitable for lever guns, except it was some time in the 20th century, possibly as late as the 30s. Now there’s the .45 AR. They worked more than OK in my pistols, but in a ’92?

The early .45 Colt cases were balloon head construction, so they wouldn't have been good for a rifle extractor to grab in a dirty chamber (especially common in the black powder era).

Well yeah, but I thought we were speaking of modern production. No doubt some black powder cartridges were still around and used in it during its early days. Those that were converted to .45 Colt were done so for the standard cartridge as we know today.

Range report. Fired 25 rounds of .38 special down range, no issues except my baby fingers having some trouble with the very tight loading gate. Otherwise an absolute blast to shoot! Attachments:

Took it back to the range today. No pics, but I was absolutely drilling the center today. I got a feel for it and am no longer over anticipating the (non-existant) recoil. Also managed to loosen up the tube spring enough after 40 rounds through it that the last 10 rounds of the box of .38 special I bought last time went in, when before I couldn’t get more than 8 at most.

Took it out again, broke in the loading gate and spring so now it loads easily and quickly, not as tight as it was. Dead on accurate too, with .38 special at least. Might have to slightly adjust the windage but it's a blast to shoot.

Took it to the range again yesterday morning. Shot 40 rounds of .38 special semi +p at ~25 yards. Still rather weak from my recent illness so had a few off center but no misses. Attachments:
