Swords do not need handles. It is a waste of space, material, the craftsman's time, and the honour of the knightly knight wielding it. There are countless examples in museums of swords with no handles. Some of them don't even have blades. All you need is the will of valour to wield such weapons to devastating effect upon the masses of peasant armies traversing the fields of medieval battle land. Modern replicas need to do a better job of recreationing sword with no handholds. That would be a better representation of the truly knightly prowess of knights. I have spoken.

This is why the vikings - the toughest of warriors - kept their handles very small!

The greatest warriors of the plains of Northern Baffin Island wore not but cardboard loincloth and their chieftains often fought visitors with swords lacking both blade and handle. Indeed the height of their technology seems to be a headless and haftless axe of such renown no man could wield it in battle so it was oft left at home during the annual leprecaun hunt...

We know the katana is an inferior sword because it has a huge handle.

I really like the complex hilt leaf blade sword! But the Alexandria isn't bad either.

To make special note of the historical reproductions of Laser Spadroons, as wielded by the Judoka in Space Wars: This was an especially egregious depiction; as all should know Laser Spadroons are powered by the intense vibrations generated by cognitive dissonance. They are often shown as simply a handle, with no blade protruding until erected. This is utter nonsense. The truly powerful Judoka Knight simply levitates the blade of the Laser Spadroon around room (or field of battle, as the case may be) - proving the needlessness of a handle at all. Naturally, due their Knightly prowess, the level of cognitive dissonance vibrations reaches epic levels, completely evaporating the blade. Hence the dearth of documentation or well-preserved specimens in the archaeological record store.

I assume you're right here, the attached picture proves that at a higher level of cognitive dissonance the blade of a laser spadroon is dispensable.
