Hello all,
I'm on the market for my next longsword, and I'm looking for one that's particularly good for the cut.
I understand that the XVIIIc (Alexandria/Principe type) has quite the reputation for being excellent at this task, but I just don't personally like the way XVIIIc's look, so I'm searching for alternatives.
I'm eyeing XIIa and XIIIa for the job, and want to pick the brains of people with experience as to which of those have worked best for you, or if there are also other types you'd recommend.
I do adore the XVIIIb, but wonder how it shapes up compared to the others as far as cutting performance.
Thanks Faye

Would like to add that, in this instance, performance in the thrust is irrelevant to what I’m looking for. Just looking for the best cutters! o7

Well i have an albion earl, which is supposed to be an xviiib.
The hollow ground profile gives it really keen edge geometry, and id say it does cut very well and handles tatami with no issues at all.
I unfortunately don't currently have any xiia or xiiia to compare its cutting performance against

The Viceroy, Baron, and Duke are others that cut exceptionally well.

Some XVIa swords are superb cutters. Take a look at the Vision Ansbach, or other ATrim XVIa models.

The widest blade with the sharpest edge angle at the area you cut with. That doesn't depend on special Oakeshott types except narrow but thick thrusting blades are excluded Strongly tapering blades may be very wide at the hilt, but not necessarily there where you cut. Theoretically a leaf blade longsword would be best.

Some XVIa swords are superb cutters. Take a look at the Vision Ansbach, or other ATrim XVIa models. Those Vision swords sure are eye-catching, and several are pretty available right now.. Eyeing the Exeter (Looks comparable to Albion’s Count?), and considering Albions take a year+ to make and don’t come with scabbards, it’s real tempting to go for it..
