Up for sale is a complete katana with all fittings, including a custom made saya and custom wrapped tsuka. Overall, the sword is light and agile. It handles well and is fairly neutrally balanced. The fittings are geometric and it has koi menuki. Fittings are modern, made in Japan. It is handachi with a wine red cotton wrap. It has a shallow sori. It also has a single bo-hi and graceful o-kissaki. The tsuka is 11" and the nagasa is 28". I have attached a couple photos, but there are more, and two videos, here: drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1M4ffb8_Ol3PMT-u3-cBdt65hmJDx9A1o
This is one of the most beautiful hamon I have ever seen on a katana. It has multiple tatsuta or kikusui (leaf or flower floating on the water) features. The activity is unbelievable. I would classify the hada as o-itame. It is large but very consistent.
The mei reads "Kato Kanekuni Saku" who was active in 1950's - 1970's. I purchased the blade second hand, but I believe it was purchased from "komonjo" on eBay. There is a strong likelihood that this blade is gimei. That said, I believe the sword is Nihonto but was made much more recently. Therefore, I will not claim or guarantee the signature. I was going to put up for shinsa, but the NTHK shinsa board is not currently considering gendaito or shinshakuto.
It has been an adventure getting this blade all mounted up, but it is now a beautiful piece. I need the money to invest in another Nihonto's polish, so I am selling. Because of the solidness of the fittings and blade (it is very tight, no play whatsoever) and questionable heritage, I think this would be a FANTASTIC martial arts blade. It is sharp with plenty of niku.
I am not super keen to part with it, given its overall quality, but I have a duty as a steward of my other blades (and also my wife would like to not have our entire investment portfolio in swords....), so I am putting it up for $1,500. I am open to offers, but not trades. Reach out if you are interested!
