I have been trying to research how far back the smallsword as we know it today goes. Would it be appropreate for a man reenacting a Dutch navy officer for example from the time of Michael De Reuyter's command of the admarality to wear a smallsword?

According to Oakeshott the smallsword developed from light cavalier rapiers ca. 1630 to 1650.

Probably and more appropriate for a naval officer than say a rapier. But the type of smallsword also matters, do you have one in mind?

I think for 1660 yes. The classic hilt existed already and the first triangular blades came up. Dunno if steel hilts (or "silver plated") existed then or all was brass.

I have the Cold Steel smallsword do you think it would be appropreate? I think so, you’ll want one with bigger annelets as this was the cross over time when they went from functional to non-functional.
