I really enjoyed the series. While the story is soap-opera, the show does convey a plausible vision of what life would be like in that place and time. My understanding is the major battle scenes were wanting from a historical accuracy point of view, but those weren't really the focus of the show.

XIII !
Ok, I watched it completely years ago and liked it. A bit like a window into the strange life and people in those times in Rome. Many unexpected things. Tried again recently and didn't came to the end of episode 1. First time watching the whole HBO sex & intrigues show was new. Perhaps I'll try again.

You have to watch it more than once. I picked up on things the second time around I somehow missed the first time. I watched it the second time right after I finished watching it the first time. I know I'll watch it again. Wish it had lasted more than two seasons maybe the people in it would have gotten more likable. I think one of the things that didn't help it is not having a good soundtrack like say Gladiator or even The Eagle.

ITs a great series...I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Like many HBO productions, great production values and "attempt" to recreate Roman life. Alas, it is "the movies". That said; "Co-creator Bruno Heller has said, "We try to balance between what people expect from previous portrayals and a naturalistic approach ... This series is much more about how the psychology of the characters affects history than simply following the history as we know it". Series Historical Consultant Jonathan Stamp also notes that the show aims for "authenticity" rather than "accuracy".
We did everything we could to make these episodes historically authentic, which meant researching and incorporating every kind of detail we could about the way our characters behaved, the way they interacted, how they dressed and gestured, the kind of streets they walked down, the way they conducted their private and public lives. We were not, however, making a documentary. We were striving for authenticity because it enriches the experience of the drama for the viewer. — Jonathan Stamp

It is one of my favorite shows ever, I really wish they had more seasons to work with as season 2 felt alittle rushed

For a Hollywood production, it's almost very nearly good. The accuracy is "close enough" when it comes to the general sense of the morality and social norms of the times, but as usual, the completely squig the fighting techniques and just do a bum's rush melee combat scene where it's every man for himself.
I'm sure if I sat down and took notes, I could find dozens of anachronisms in costumes and sets. But why bother? It's a throwaway show for the entertainment of the masses, not a historical documentary or scholarly academic project. I just wish HBO would give us bread and money for watching it, like in the old days...

I haven't seen it since high school but I loved it back then. Really enjoyed the guy that played Julius Caesar.
Also, that poor, dumb S.O.B that had to read Cicero's smack talk to Mark Antony in the Senate... jeez.

I love Rome. I remember watching it when it first ran. And have watched the DVDs multiple times.
Definitely gets a 'YEA!' from me.

definitely loved the show but it was done by John Milius.
1st...I loved Titus banged the semprini out of Cleopatra. Yeah, no Liz Taylor. But I like spinners so I would definitely done the same. lol
it is kind of a tragic story with so many harsh plot points
hell, I kinda despise the Romans but it was really good and fun.
Possibly one of my favorite scenes lol

Sorry to say, some bad news actor Ray Stevenson ( Titus Pullo ) just passed away at age 58. liked him in both Rome and King Arthur.
