Eric of Melniboné's Strombringer, black soulhungry demon sword! www.google.de/search?q=elric+of+melnibone+sword&tbm=isch&hl=de&client=ms-opera-mobile&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwji-s7UzrH9AhVPgf0HHUSWC8kQrNwCKAB6BQgBEK4C&biw=980&bih=1863Today I made my first successfull experiments with cold blueing a swordblade to totally black. Recently I bought a gold lacquer pencil which would make nice glowing runes on a blackened blade. Do such pencils exist with luminescent lacquer btw? Needs some research! Now I plan to customize one of my swords to STORMBRINGER! I have a few candidates: CS Cutting Competition Sword, an XVIII c, very broad, but a bit too short perhaps, very agile. My favorite. DSA Two Handed Dane XVIII e, slender, agile. My second favorite. Windlass Avalon Sword, a XV with a nice fantasy hilt, a too short blade. But I have the Eric novels with illustrations of Stormbringer as a huge XV. Windlass Erbach, XVIII c, really huge, but also blade heavy. My Albion Munich remembers me much of Stormbringer, an XVIII b, but I probably won't customize it because it's my most historical correct sword. To get more fun out of this thread I added a poll for you, three votes possible. Let's see what you think!

I sense the one who voted for broad and curved didn't vote for a sword, but definitely for a stormbringer.

My first trials with my Cutlass Machete. I had removed the original black coating long ago but the cold blueing worked well. The gold lacquer pencil works also but I have to stabilize the lacquer somehow when oiling the blade. More time perhaps.

It looks super cool. Of course, the best would be engraving the runes in, but that is much more of a project!

That looks great! Well done with the cold bluing.

Dear diary: First blueing attempt on the Competition Cutting Sword wasn't perfect, some spots didn't blue. I assume it's the close to mirror polish of the blade. So I'm wait some time and use grey scotch Brit to sand the patina to light satin grey and try it again. I did the same with the machete which turned out well. The pommel becomes dark too, the crossguard less, but I hope sanding will help there too. Second attempt with better results: I'll do another blueing on it the next days. Some spots need more darkness. I hear a susurrant growling and moaning in my rooms now ... Ok, a less dramatic picture, just oiled, you can see a little spot in the center of the crossguard over my thumb where the blueing failed, there are also some spots at one edge. The next days I try to fix it. I ordered red and silver car lacquer pencils, also a luminescent lacquer pencil for the runes. The golden lacquer dissolved after oiling the blade. Perhaps I'll let it dry longer and apply just petrol jelly carefully. I also ordered a ruby stone for the crossguard.

It's too bad you can't paint the blade with Vanta Black, to add creepyness.

Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.

That DSA 2 handed Dane would have been my choice. The Vindaaris has a unique blade shape that would have worked well, too

Hah, I just blackened my DSA 2H Dane XVIIIe: Ok, with less drama: First attempt worked well, probably because I tried to etch it dark once so it had a satin finish already. The Vindaaris has a good shape for a Stormbringer project. And not too many squiggles:

HA! Yeah, the Vin isn't one I'd normally get because it leans a bit too much on the fantasy sword side (and to me that screams wallhanger) and it's a bit too thick where it flares, but for a Stormbringer project it does seem to have the right amount of wacky. Maybe if the hilt had a bit more interest it'd be perfect...but the difference between "perfect" and "over the top" is a fine line. As a collector and more of a historically correct type person, simpler is probably better.
But for my money the Dane is perfect. That's one I'd buy just because it's so slim and beautiful anyway.

I love how these look. Kind of makes me think of obsidian.

My favorite fantasy sword of all time. Love the idea, can't wait to see the finished result.

It's the black patina combined with a coating of sewing machine oil which makes the shiny black look. I'm waiting a few days to see how the blueing stabilizes and plan to go back to my usual petrol jelly coating for blades. My former acid edging experiments weren't that good. Petrol jelly needs a bit of rubbing into the blade and that removed the acid black patina too easily. In my golden runes experiment I've seen that this patina is much more stable (unfortunately not the golden lacquer with the oil).
And yeah, I like my Conan Atlantean from Windlass, but Stormbringer always was the most impressing fantasy sword for me. And both swords, the Competition Cutter and the DSA Dane are both very agile swords due to a relative thin blade stock. That makes more fun to swing them around than my 7+ lb Atlantean. And to hear them whisper...

The blade of the Competition Cutter needed a few extra blueing sessions to become more homogeneous black. Still not perfect. And I bought a ruby stone, glued it to a magnet and attached it on the hilt. It's too dark, not very red and too big. Esp. on the Dane it impedes the scabbard. I plan to buy smaller red rhinestones. With oil coating: Also first experiments with luminescent lacquer: It's in a tube like glue, not easy to draw clear lines with it. And it doesn't glow very long. Since I don't plan to use futhark runes I have to think something up. Perhaps it's a good idea to create something for the way to use the lacquer, brush strokes, Chinese or Klingon like.
