So, I'm looking for a Bolo knife for general use and carry. It has to come with a sheath that can hang from my belt. Who makes a good Bolo that has a good enough tempering to withstand brushwork acceptably, and isn't excessively priced? None that I have seen have been particularly expensive so that ironically makes it slightly difficult to discern which are good or not.

Ontario Sp53 (1/4" 5160). Ka-Bar Cutlass machete if you want a few inches longer and a bit thinner (3/16" 1085).

Condor offers a bunch of Bolo type (various shapes that offer similar performance) but prices have crept upwards over the last several years.

I also understand the quality has gone down, but no personal experience with current production. Generally speaking the blade thickness is more than my liking adding weight.

My pick for mass produced would be one of the TFW’s. There are several to choose from. I’m a pretty big TFW fan, despite the questionable marketing claims.
Custom: I would contact L Driggers and basically beg him to make me one. Wes Beem is making outstanding pieces, too. Purna also seems to make robust customs to spec.
Antique: I would go with either an 1898 Argentine Artillery bolo or an 1848 Swedish Infantry/Pioneer bolo (“Faskinkniv”). Both are very well built, distinctive and attractive, and boast fantastic steel.
