Can someone help? I've read that the pommel is held on by a nut. It certainly doesn't look peened. Is the oval piece the nut, or a cover for the nut?

Hello hobieh3. The tang is threaded. You will have to unscrew the domed part on top of the pommel cap. I did it by covering the dome with some thick supple leather, so as to not damage the dome and then just get it off with some good pliers. May be wise to soak the pommel cap and dome with penetrating oil first, lest you break off the piece of the tang in the dome. This is quite thin. Set the sabre, pommel down, in a small container with penetrating oil and let it soak overnight. Next morning clean off the oil and do the leather thing. Be very careful. Heating the dome before the unscrew may work well too, as is hitting the top of the dome and exposed bit of tang with a good wack of a hammer to break the rusty seal.
