Axe project update. Here are a couple pictures of the finished etching. If you are interested, you can see the entire etching process on my website guildofthegildedhilt.com under the "in the works" tab. Next I need to start on the handle. I am planning on brass fixtures at the top of the blade and at the knob. Additionally, there will be an etched brass belly plate on the handle below the head. Since I am not very familiar with axe design, I am not certain how long of a handle to put on it and would be interested in suggestions. Thanks, Shawn Guildofthegildedhilt.com

Agreed, that's pretty awesome. I see a bolt-like thing sticking out of the end of the shaft. Is something going to go there?

Based on the single handed war axes I own, 16-24" below the head covers the range of haft lengths. Hatchets and tomahawks will be at the shorter end of that range.

Thank you all for the kind comments. As for the threaded piece you see out of the top of the handle, I carved out a 1/2 inch by 3/16 inch slot (1 1/4 inches deep) in the top of the handle to insert a piece of a 1/2 inch steel spade bit on which I threaded the shaft. This allowed me to set a steel pin horizontally through the handle and the spade portion of the bit to fully secure the insert. I am making a brass cap that will set over the head of the axe handle and a tapped finial to secure it. My plan is to do something very similar at the knob, a decorative brace piece to assist with a wielder's hand not slipping off the end of the handle. I am doing the work this way as I perfer that my creations can be diassembled and reassembled without damage, if one desires.
Before I can do the knob I have to decide on the length of the handle. Thank you Eastman for the information about you pieces. Could you tell me the approximate weight of your single handled war axes.
Thanks again everyone,
Shawn Guildofthegildedhilt.com
