As long as it's told well! Cornwell's Uhtred isn't the (or a) historical one, he - in the stories - lived during Alfred's reign until at least the Battle of Brunnaburh 937 AD. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rulers_of_BamburghI don't have a problem with some changes of the historical facts. I hate the painting by numbers TV-series serial skriptwriters who fear the audience would be shocked if they see something they don't know from other series. Like using shields during a fight, helmets, medieval families with more members than mom, dad and two children. The first three seasons were good because they followed the books in principle. In the very moment the serial script-killers took over, it decreased. Same with Game of Thrones. Not that everything was totally bad, but I feel it could have been better.

I'm sure they had a Bloomingdale store back then where she could buy that outfit or at least a drapery store that could have made that for her.

tbh, I knew nothing about Jarl Haakon before the show but I was very wtf when I saw the trailer.
For a fan of Norse/Viking stuff, it's not like I could talk for hours on this legendary king and that queen and so on or quote the Eddas (hell, I had to memorize scripture in Christian school for 8yrs and probably could only remember a sentence here or there now). Before Vikings hit, I could talk about Eric the Red and Lief Ericsson since I wrote a report on Lief once as a kid.
You know if they had just led with "This is the OG Jarl Haakon's descendent/daughter/granddaughter" from the start and wanted to pitch the Jarl bedded/bought an African in the Mediterranean somewhere and brought her home, I'd probably not have given a semprini. I think after the season aired, they started clarifying this.
It's a stretch but it's nothing unheard of from some soldier to take a bride or women locally from where they have been stationed or venturing (or slaving/raping/pillaging). Sheeit, James T Kirk and Riker would screw anything remotely humanoid at the drop of a hat.
Which actually spun off finding out there was an enclave of Africans somewhere in Britain during Roman times though it's highly speculated they died when the entirety of Northern Europe went to semprini after 100yrs after 536.
If 35-55% of the Mediterranean seems to have died from an explosion from Iceland, I'm sure the death toll was even higher in non mainland Northern Europe.
I didn't even think about her dress. Curly hair makes my brain stop working anyways. I like the name, Estrid, well enough.

Just checked the index of every book I own on Norse history and no Jarl Haakon in any of them and no mention of a black Viking let alone a black woman Viking leader. What the internet is doing is playing word games with their readers. They'll say " Is Jarl Haakon a real person " then start talking about the TV show person so the dumb and dumber think they're talking about a real person in history. Well heck I just heard where Jesus was trans and another one where he was Buddhist. The cancel culture generation is rewriting history to their own liking. The day is coming where we won't have a clue what is history or fiction. I've seen people recommend watching Knightfall as a source of information on Knights Templar. The only facts that are correct about the show is yes there were knights called Templar and they did go on crusades to take the Holy Lands. A Templar did not kill Philp the king of France a wild bore did. And that same Templar did not have an affair and a child with Joan the queen of France. And he also did not smash the Holy Grail against a tree when it didn't save Joan who had Philips dagger in her. The day is coming where the Jedi discovered America. I don't want to start collecting lightsabers.

Yeah, seems the more knowledge at our fingertips (all information must still be analyzed through filters of reason, historical vetting, common sense) the dumber we get.

You see, the errors you guys make is still bothering to watch anything new. I didn't bother with any of these new shows, and I'm not at all bothered. Didn't watch house if dragons, rings of power, Vikings in Valhalla, because I didn't expect anything good to come of it and was right, by the looks of things
If you continue to consume new media, you will continue to be disappointed

It cracks me up how many people actually think any of these shows are real history. They don't want to take the time to do the research so they just watch these fictional shows. It's like you don't want to take the time to exercise and eat right all you want to do is take a pill to be healthy. Short cuts never really work.

The less obvious stupid mistakes and thousand times seen story twists they make the better I feel entertained. Some historical inaccuracies don't bother me, fantasy stories don't have them at all. Plot holes and stereotypes suck. And actions only idiots do but look so cool as the scriptwriters think.

I didn't watch VW yet but I'm just reading Neil Price's Children of Ash and Elm about vikings. The vikings were not racist and relative laizzes faire concerning sex, they enslaved and raped just anyone. A black family member would have been no problem and sometimes women replaced deceased husbands in their social position if there was no other male relative. So, not impossible! Wrong is that Haakon is a given name and not a family name. So, no Estrid Haakon.

Meh, we're venturing into new and unexplored territory. Just like the Norse would.

Gunnar mentioned something about Jesus being Buddhist. My philosophy/anthropology persona had to chime in.
I totally didn't think about Haakonsdottir.

watching any historical type drama and expecting realism is like watching sons of anarchy and thinking that's what outlaw mcs are like, i just watch em for the fun escapism, kind of gave up on last kingdom bout season 4 as gap was so long forgot story line then it became repetitive, if it was accurate i dont think anyone would actually tune in as it would be too "violent" and "racist" etc, since now all tv has to reflect the world we live in despite being set 100s of years ago and in a country that didnt have a whole lot of mixed ethnicity

I think some degree of realism is always necessary. Sons of Anarchy would have been ridiculous if they had bikes without motors (coconut shells?), wear hats with ostrich feathers and fight with water pistols.
Edit: Humph, thinking about this... perhaps even more entertaining this way?
