This was originally posted elsewhere in response to someone wanting sparring videos and I gave videos of true combat, then saw that it was in the Japanese Swords sub-board. So rather than deleting I moved it here for anyone that maybe interested.
Not a sporting pretend fight sparring video that you requested but two of the real thing. The one in San José is almost like home to me although I hate going there and stay away as much as possible. I watch channel 11 regularly and recognized some of the people but missed this one. The second video shows better of what to expect. Both show no rules, anything goes the trick is to survive.
Here the poleman lets the machete man grasp his pole then take it. He didn’t know the move to break the man’s hold. Eventually the machete man took the pole and beat the poleman with his own weapon.

Fascinating. Are these “first blood” type duels, primarily? I didn’t get a “battle to the death” vibe, even though the encounters had plenty of aggressive energy, both apparent and latent.
A good reminder of the thin veneer of civilization.
Are those swords?

Generally, it’s a first blood situation. A finger amputation is not uncommon. The injured party runs and most likely the victor will not follow. However, mortal injuries occur.
They are using machetes.

I can see why you are into swords, pgandy! At least one reason, anyway. :-)

If you don’t understand Spanish the pole victim in San José was sent to the hospital in grave condition.

No comprende, amigo, gracias! Was that from his own pole or the machete? Ugh.

That was from his own pole. The machete guy took it away from him then beat him with it.

I imagine it's like... When someone gets injured they generally no longer feel like fighting.
Machete duels are fascinating, they remind me of a more mobile version of saber fighting. Generally, the same techniques seem to be used, but since its a smaller blade, it tends to move about more wildly
Thanks for posting

That second video , those two had great footwork and structure wasnt expecting them to look that decent. Still a fools game to get into a fight like that. The first video the pole arm was not a spear but looked more like a poolstick lol, unless I am mistaken but it didnt appear as what you would typically with spear versus single hand sword for obvious reason. If you use a weak aluminum pole to fight someone with a machete you got a death wish lol

TIf you use a weak aluminum pole to fight someone with a machete you got a death wish lol That appears to me what he did. But it was his pole that got him, not the machete.
