Decided to make a list of swords I have owned in a fairly digestible format:
Japanese
Kaneie Budo 2: This was a favorite of mine for a while, until i started to cut through the saya lol. My sensei told me it was most likely because the sword was too long for me, so I ended up selling it to a friend who liked it more.
Bugei Samurai: This was an old 2003 Bugei that I traded for. Big fan of the blade geometry, but the sword was too much work for a college student to either have the time for, or the money.
Ronin Katana Dojo Pro 16: Decent beater sword. Worse than the kaneie in every way, but the blade was pretty bullet proof. Not the biggest fan of the tsuka and its sempriniesque synthetic ito+no hishigami.
Ronin Katana RK 12: Pretty good sword for the price, and oddly enough, it has hishigami, unlike the dojo pro.... hmmm. Anyways, ended up giving it to a friend as a birthday gift.
Kaneie Custom: Had tsukamaki done by cottontail. Blade geometry was good, but had some very....odd problems. Blade was super tip heavy, almost to the point where it felt like a crowbar, and it had a small deformation in the blade. Definitely more of a cutter than a nimble sword, and it was decent at that.
Hanwei Bamboo Mat custom: Pretty nice sword with cool looking tsukamaki. Did some work on it myself, including new habaki and tsuka work. Decent sword, but again just wasnt a fan of the feel.
Huawei Dotanuki Notare(1): Excellent sword. Made me a huawei supremacist. The sword I most regret selling, and because of that I am waiting on another one I bought from another user lol. Perfect planes, excellent geometry, super nimble blade, monster cutter. Everything one could want in a production sword.
Hanwei Tori Elite: Pleasantly surprised by this one. Makes a great dojo sword, is a monster cutter, and blade is fairly durable. Everything on it is pretty tight. Only thing im kinda iffy about is the polish.
Skyjiro Black Hawk: Super nimble sword, fittings were kinda meh. Looked pretty gaudy and wouldnt find myself dead in my dojo using it, so I sold it to someone who would appreciate it more.
Dragon King Ogami Itto: Fittings were nice, blade geometry was ok. Thats about it: kashira didnt fit tsuka properly, transitions were meh, blade wasnt that nimble, sword overall was just heavy. Also kogatana would make a squeaky noise whenever you removed it. As you could probably guess, I sold it.
Kaneie Black Tiger: Very good sword, awesome package. Didnt like the hazuya polish, and it was a little long for me. Sold.
Dragon King Fletching: Nice budget sword. No hishigami, which is a big negative. College buddy fell in love with it, so I sold it to him for 150. Also wasnt that big of a fan of the tsuka shape.
Hanbon custom sword: Dont even get me started: sword was butter knife dull, had no niku, worst saya binding Ive ever seen, tsuka core was crappy, nakago was badly executed. Disliked it so much i gave it to someone for free just to get it off my hands.
Hanwei Practical waki: Decent wakizashi, didnt like how the blade looked. Thats about it tho. All around solid package.
Komonjo Gendaito: Another project I couldnt afford. Liked how the blade looked, polish was impressive. Felt pretty good in the hand, and liked the handachi tsuka style. However, there were lots of little things that needed to be fixed that werent worth my time. It was more of a collector piece rather than a user piece, and as many probably know, Im not a collector, Im a user(still by definition I guess I collect, but you know what I mean lol).
Feilong Higo: Bohi were well executed, sword felt good. TBH no idea why I sold this one lmao. Think it had to do with the mune not being symmetrical lol. Good sword if you can find one for sale.
50 Dollar Musha: Better sword than I thought it would be, and it was my first one. Had a lot of fun destroying it lol. Does sword stuff fine imo.
Skyjiro Taka Chigai: Very nice feeling sword. Super nimble for its length. Love the geometry. However it is waaaaayyyy too long for me, so im looking to sell it.
Kanemichi Mill steel gendaito: First nihonto. Needs some tsuka work, but nothing unmanageable or anything that would break the bank.
Huawei Dotanuki Notare(2): has black leather wrap with rokusho mokko tsuba and nami themed fuchi kashira, big fan of the blade, and it feels even more nimble than my last Huawei
Yomikuni Hotaru Tachi: Older yomikuni model, geometric yokote, sempriniesque mirror polish, decent fittings, with a pretty good saya. Ito was loose, and once i got it i realized it was shorter than i expected.
European
Hanwei Tinker Bastard Sword: Well made sword, pretty good cutter. If i am being honest, I just dont like how euro swords feel. Thus I tend to not spend any money on them.
Windlass Pompeii Gladius: Guard wasnt even attached when I got it. Besides that its a decent sword. Keep thinking of selling it, but its found its way to stay around.... for now.
Other
APOC Tactical Katana: Feels like a Goth Bokuto. Nice beater sword, and you dont really need to do maintenance on it. Probably the main reason I still have it.
Question you guys are probably wondering is "How does a college student afford this". Well the answer is that swords are essentially the only hobby I currently spend my money on, and I usually only own any given 3 at a time. I try to sell swords or trade swords whenever I find one I really want. I also work a part time job to pay for it.
