I have asked that already in my Dao thread but maybe not enough people read that old thread so I changed my mind about making a new thread I am saving up money to get the lk chen yang ling dao but while browsing around to look for some other swords I found out that the dynasty forge yanmandao that was out of stock for quite some time might come back next year www.swords-and-more.com/goosequill-sabel-yan-mao-dao.htmlI am not sure if this company knows stuff the general public does not know or if is just wishful thinking. Anyway now to my question. Does anybody here have experience with the dynasty forge dao and if so how do they fair quality wise compared to the lk Chen yang ling dao? The LK Chen yang ling dao is still my favorite because if seems to offer great quality and it is cheaper than the Dynasty forge one. But I am still curious about the Dynasty Forge yangmandao because I was wanted one for many years already. In fact, if had been available this Dao would have been for first Dao ever. Due to unavailability, I went for the Hanwei Oxtail Dao instead. Not a bad choice either I am very happy with my Oxtail Dao though.

Swords and More usually has 20 % Black Week discount. I'm tempted. Btw. I have the Hanwei Chinese Practical Broadsword, an oxtail dao too, cheaper, less bling, but a good dao.

That's good to know about the Black Week deal. Sounds tempting indeed. I need to do more research about the quality of the Dynasty Forge blades though before I make my final decision. Their Euro blades should be quite decent. At least some youtube reviews about their Euro blades I saw many years ago implied that. Haven't read much about their Chinese blades yet. But I am going to dig deeper into the internet.
And yeah I am a big fan of the Hanwei Oxtail Dao, to be honest. I like the form of that blade and the quality is also good. A good sword for a noob like myself to do some test cutting once in a while.
I wouldn't mind getting a Yang Ma Dao from Hanwei if they made one which is unfortunately not the chase.

Afaik Dynasty Forge swords are made by Huanuo, which also make some swords for Cold Steel. Lemons possible as always, but in general ok afaik.

They are European, not Chinese swords, but I rate my LK Chen Ribaldo head and shoulders above the Dynasty Forge Archduke. A number of reviews I read after buying the Archduke commented on Dynasty Forge swords being substantially overweight compared to other manufacturers of similar types (but very pretty to look at).

Thanks a lot for sharing your impressions about your European sword from LK Chen. It is quite save to say in general that LK chen is great new sword maker that is a win for the sword community. The reviews of the LK chen swords are very promising and picking up the LK Chen Dao would be worthwile edition to my collection. I am sure of it.

I liked the Ribaldo so much that I pre-ordered the LKC Saxony Rapier.

I've owned and handled daos made by Huanuo and I handled LK Chen swords when sharpening for a friend. I recommend LK over Huanuo.

Razor Thanks for sharing your recommendation. eastman That's cool. Did not know that LKC is going to make an Rapier too. Getting an arming sword or a long sword and a an Rapier is also on my to do list but that's something for the distant future. For now I am saving for the Yanling Dao and the next one after the Dao is going to a Qama. But for the future a Euro sword from LKC and Rapier does not sound that bad. It sounds pretty good actually.

There are links to the rapier in the Renaissance and Military sub-forum. It looks very good and performs very well in their test cutting. I will be providing more details and a direct comparison to the A&A Musketeer and Windlass Christus Imperat rapiers after it arrives.

Cold Steel also has a liuyedao that's most likely made by Huanuo! It looks interesting and was supposed to come out earlier this year. www.coldsteel.com/chinese-saber/They have a lot of other new Chinese weapons but they are all pre-order currently.

Turok Thanks for mentioning the coold steel option. @all How is the opinion about chinese cold steel swords in general? What I have heard so far is that the quality of the cold steel blades is pretty good which is great for a novice that wants to get into test cutting with chinese swords. But I have also heard that there are swords are not very historical accurate.. Is that sentiment true?

Cold Steel swords tend to be heavy, overbuilt, and stodgy in general. The Gim is nice, well balanced, and I recommend it. It's been in the market for a long time and there are many great reviews out there about it. They haven't changed it much through the years.
The blade is mirror polished but stains very easily when cutting. Clean it thoroughly before putting it back in the scabbard. Fittings are nice, Longmen waterfall fittings. I like how the fittings are nailed instead of cheaply glued on and it's a reasonably historically accurate Chinese sword.
Kultofathena states that the CS dadao tends to have loose guards and the Butterfly Swords are too fat and wide for my liking. They also have a oxtail dao which is idiotically called the "Willow Leaf" that came out in 2020. The sword looks identical to the one Huanuo used to make but it comes with a black leather sheath. The sheath looks ugly and the leather makes the sword susceptible to rust!
Hope this helps!

You're welcome, pete085 www.kultofathena.com/product/cold-steel-chinese-sabre/Well looks like it's finally out and it's currently $750! 🤦 The sword has a relatively short 28 3/16" blade and the steel is just plain 1060. I would like to personally see if it's as good as the Gim sword, but it looks like that will be a long time from now! Cold Steel was recently bought out by GSM Outdoors and probably still facing a lot of global supply chain issues.

KoA's prices have become way too close to MSRP for CAS and Cold Steel over the last year. Much less expensive at other sellers, $575 at knife center, $650 at MidwayUSA. I do agree that $750 for a plain jane 1060 dao comes across as a little spendy to me too. $575's a little more cozy but at those rates I'd be inclined to just keep waiting to see if Dynasty Forge ever restocks (seems like a long shot at this point, sadly).

Thanks for mentioning other vendors. Midway USA is out of the question for me unforutately because I am based in Austria. Not sure if midway USA ships to Europe. Kult of Athena does and I have ordered my Hanwei Oxtail Dao there without any problems. But it is a good idea to check out other vendors to see if they price is different compared to KOA.
