I got the idea from Cottontail Customs of using an old Japanese trick to eliminate blade rattle. Simply using hair. Rattle is something that I normally do not worry about, but in the case of Windlass’ Mk3 kukri the scabbard was grossly oversize resulting in the worse fit I’ve experienced.
The first step with the Mk3 was to shim the scabbard’s mouth. After I was satisfied with that the blade continued to slap against the scabbard at the distal end. Then came to hardest part, finding hair. Hazel was most uncooperative in this respect, but I had better luck with Amazon. I tied a knot in the middle of a small handful and tied length of sewing thread to that as a method to retrieve the hair if necessary and shoved it into the scabbard with the aid of the kukri’s blade. This eliminated the rattle but in a short time the individual hairs started coming out. Thank goodness I had the foresight to tie the string to the bundle that I used to pull the remaining hair out. I then repeated the process using two knots and that has been in place for about a year now and working fine.
I still have the memory of putting compressible foam in the saya of one of my sword sticks. That worked for a couple of years before working its way to the bottom of the saya preventing the blade entering all the way. That took effort to remove.

thanks pgandy. that's an awesome trick and safe to boot. wonder if you glob a few areas w/ gorilla glue of the hair ball (dry before putting in) if less hairs come out. worst that can happen is my wife thinks I am even more weird for buying hair online
i'm sure quite a lot of us tried brainstorming this but the solution seems elusive I thought maybe silicone putty on a HT viking scabbard...but otherwise seems like an irreversible attempt and may ruin the scabbard. not sure I want silicone putty all over the blade when I take it out every time...
epoxy putty might get too hard / scratch the blade but thought maybe shoving in a chunk and greasing the blade heavily and sheathing it while it cures :o

We find out much by experimenting but I suggest extreme caution as to what you put into the saya. I personally would do no more than the hair at the distal end.
In regards to the Mk3 noisy scabbard, later when removing the two sleeves that the two small knives went in, I discovered another source that created the excessive noise. Unlike the traditional Nepalese made scabbards with a wood core, Windlass chose to use some type of risen making it into a sound box.
My answer to the above was on the fly as I was going out of the door. I do not think adding glue to the hair will work, on the contrary. That will take out the compressibility. As is the hair will move and compress allowing the blade to pass then expanding padding the blade.
