Anyone have recommendations on the best head protection I can get for sparring? I am at a battojutsu school and we do Gekken style sparring, I am new to the school and am from a HEMA background. I severely underestimated how powerful the hits are with the padded swords used for the sparring is.
I went against one of the teachers there and he cracked the top of my head so hard I thought I was going to black out lol. I want to know what kind of better head protection I can buy that would avoid damage, as I don't feel the face masks we were using were enough protection. My wrists and fingers also got pretty banged up without protection but I know what I can wear for that.
I will tell sparring partners to go with less power when aiming for the head too, but what helmet protection is oht there that can really absorb a lot more so that I can be better protected? Brain injuries are the reason I never competed in combat sports despite being a lifelong martial artist. But I never expected I would fafe similar issues fighting in sword styles with all that padded gear and the tools for sword imitation that are used. Thanks!

If they are hitting that hard, no real amount of head armor will keep you from injury.
BUT....consider looking for someone's old SCA helm, pad that puppy up and go for it. You'll know if you padded it right. And I've seen old helms go for as little as 50.00

We use SPES Go-Now trainers from Poland. They weigh around 2/3 to 3/4 of the sword types they simulate. You can hit pretty hard with them. Fencing masks and Lacrosse gloves are the way to go with these. These helmets are okay, too, but since we train with knives also we prefer the fencing masks...
The fencing masks offer more protection from strikes to the throat and top of the head, and from thrusts with training knives - they can slip through the bars of the helmets linked to above. The SPES trainers are too thick to slip through.
