I'm leaning towards the Windlass 15th Century Longsword from Kult of Athena. I know Billiam has this one and likes it... Anyone else like this one as well?
It's the toughest choice at the moment. It's either the Windlass 15th century or the Hanwei Hand and a Half Sword from Kult of Athena.
This will be my first sword, I don't know why I want a hand and a half, I guess they have always appealed to me for some reason, but I want to be able to cut and thrust halfway decently.
In all honesty, since tomorrow will be the day I order my first sword, which would be the better buy for me?

Edvvard, I think it's a toss up. I haven't handled the Windlass but I've heard good things about it. I have the Hanwei hand and a half. I like it and it's a excellent thruster, but just so so on the cutting part in my opinion.
Be aware, neither of these swords comes sharp enough to cut with from the factory. My Hanwei came "sharpish" but needed some work on the edge to get it to cut.
As to Windlass none of there blades come sharp from the factory that I'm aware of. However, KOA offers a sharpening service for them, I'd take advantage of that if it were me.

It sucks, because I want to be able to use it for thrusts, but I want the focus on cutting. I really like what I hear about both and it's too tough of a decision for me to just make on my own... If you had neither, which would you pic just by hearing from other people and reviews?

Hmmm, that's a hard choice. I love the look of the Hanwei. Just from the reviews, with not having handled it, I'd probaly pick that one. However having handled it and if I wanted one primarily for cutting that's not the one I would pick. Having said that if I somehow lost the one I have, I'd buy another.
If I were undecided, I wouldn't rush it, I'd wait and see which one called to me the most.

Well, I might try out the Windlass 15th Century for my first since it seems more suited to cutting and light thrusting. I have been looking at it far too long to not at least give it a try I think. One problem with it, it's way, way too shiny for me. This can be fixed without completely ruining the blade right?
Also I hear about bad windlass scabbards... Are there any manufacturers out there that might sell a scabbard for it?

Sounds, like a good choice to me, Edvvard. As to your other questions, I'll leave those to others with more experiences with such things.
Maybe, you'll give us a review when you get it? hint.. hint....

Yes you can change the finish on the blade. Basically do a reverse polishing where instead of going finer and finer, go the other way until you have what you like.
On a side note, the hanwei does come with a very nice scabbard and windlass scabbards tend to be a bit on the bad side. If you care about such things influencing your choice.

I had the windlass, but sold it. It wasnt due to my disliking it, I traded up. It really was a good sword. I second ricwillys opinoin. just chose the one that you feel most strongly about. as for the mirror polish, that can be removed by using heavier grits sandpaper till you get the desired finish, then polish it off with steel wool. Just be sure to keep it oiled, rust sets in quickly when the blade has the fine scratches the heavier grit sandpaper leaves. I hope you fall in love with whichever you chose, owning a functional blade for the first time is a great feeling!

The first one's always the hardest.....but if your like the rest of us that's been sucked into the black vortex of swords....you may end up owning both at some point in time.
I have several Hanwei's and several Windlass pieces...each has it's own character. One things for certain...not every sword will feel the same to every person. The few issues such as ill fitting scabbard (which can easily be fixed buy super gluing small pieces of felt into the throat) or the finish of the blade, which has already been addressed are just part of the journey.
My sentiments too on ..which ever you chose...may it be a joy (for you) to have and serve you well Look forward to your final decision.
Cheers,
Bill

OK, like said before, I'm pretty sure I'll end up owning both in the end:D There are 4 more medieval weapons I'm looking into including the Hanwei after I purchase the Windlass.
I live in Ohio, apparently KoA is in Chicago. think it might get here thursday or wednesday this week if I order it tomorrow morning?
I may decide to review it, but would it be right for me to? I don't have really any experience with swords.

I'm certain the sword has been reviewed already, but many of us feel that the more opinions on a piece, the better. The more opinions we get, the more accurate the general view becomes.

I may decide to review it, but would it be right for me to? I don't have really any experience with swords. Just tell the truth as you see it. It being your first blade, just tell others if you think its worth it. You dont have to be an expert to give an opinion, say what you like and dont like. Im sure whatever review you do will be good and honest, your wearing a friars robe for gods sake! ;D

Ok, I have my 15th Century longsword on the way now:D
I don't know why, but I have only felt this good about one other purchase.
I'm thinkin it will get here tomorrow or thursday.
I'll post an initial by site review and see how to review it through cutting and all. Any tips?

Did you remove the shine and all that off of yours bill? Yes...I cold blued the guard & pommel and took a Scotch-Brite pad and emery cloth to the blade to knock off the shine. cheers, Bill

I'll have to try that. I have perma blue for retouching firearms if that's what you are talking about... Are the handles of these pretty decent as well. As in the string/cord part.
It's due in tomorrow too:D It will probably be there when I get in from class.

Just noticed this thread. I also have the Windlass longsword. The blade is a tad whippy for my tastes. I think it's a really fantastic looking sword though. The wire wrap can wear on your hand after a while if you're not wearing gloves. The pommel and cross were getting a bit dull and heading toward rust so I dis-assembled it, buffed the guard and pommel, and then sprayed them with clear lacquer. Looks great and now I don't have to worry about touching these parts as I use the sword. I think you'll be happy with it, I'm pretty finicky and I still like mine.
