I received the Sakura katana around a month ago now
So I have had a little bit of time to get a little feel for it
,notice some of the finer details too..
The katana came in a foam packed box wrapped in what appeared to be some kind a sack material..It arrived safely and in one peice.
When I opened the box,I noticed no sword bag which was a little odd as usually the first thing I see is a sword bag..This was no big deal really though as usually I have a few around anyways if I needed a bag for use.
But still no sword bag..
Ok so my first impressions of the actual sword the first thing I noticed when I picked it up was that the saya felt thinner and more refined compared to other Chinese swords. It was quite nice to hold in hand it was painted red with black spots .it has no clear laquer coating over that however so it has a more Matt look and the spots give it a little textured feeling in your hand..so the saya overall I liked however one small thing I didn’t like was the plastic fittings on it no horn fittings ..
On taking the blade from the saya I was anxious to look at of course. As I was in much anticipation and I wasn’t disappointed their..However the blade had a thick coating of oil/grease which during transport had stained the blade and wouldn’t wipe off..I was very happy that the blade want rusted but had a lot of trouble removing the oil first, and the the stains it took a lot of rubbing alcohol land I mean a lot..maybe a different oil for transport.however id rather stains that can be removed than rust so for that I’m thankful.
But yes the stains came off in the end thank god☺️.I don’t know how much of the polish was affected if at all from the alcohol as I have nothing to gauge against..
But the blade now this is their entry level or what the call Chinese versions..But still the blade was nice well polished for this level, clean lines. The geometry seems ok,the kisaki was nice …at first I thought the hada was a little gaudy or thick lined however it has really grown on me and I do like it .The hamon seemed neat and had nice transition into the shinogi..and the hamon continues up this the kisaki and has some turnback on it just how I like it…good job their vsey…The shinogi ji has this sort of speckled hada pattern thru it.could be from a little nugui im not 100% certain tho..this aspect I also liked..It also has some slight Sori to it.
The fittings the habaki and seppa seem to be just the regular items we get…The tsuba seems made from brass and then powder coated and has Sakura .blossoms on it as does the fuchi and kashira at first I thought a few of my blossoms were gold painted but it was just the powder coating that had rubbed off..since then and since the photos I’ll include which where taken at time of arrival more of the powder coating has come off the blossoms on both sides and around the ridges of the tsuba.not that I mind too much like I said it makes these areas look sort off gold..But the coating on the tsuba may. E something Vsey wants to look into..
But over the fittings. Are nice the kashira has a shitodome which is wonderful too see and the tsuba is thin which gives it a more authentic feel.
The Tsuka maki seems to be tight and holds the menuki in well and the tsuka and nagako have one mekugi Ana in it and the mekugi is rounded of around the edges which is nice to see and adds to the comfort of the grip…The ito seems to be synthetic fibre same with the sageo..
On the sageo they tie 4 one end and 3 the other good to see.We don’t see much of that.
The fittings are all tight no movement .No saya rattle .everything fits together well..
The handling on the blade,I have still done no cutting with it only kata
But for me it is a light and nimble sword which I can easily also do single handed the tsuka is a little shorter than I’m used to but I have huge hands and am a large man..So yeah..but it is fast light and comfortable to hold..
I really do like this katana and believe it’s worthwhile getting .and like to go a view it and make the light hit the hada and hamon just for a look..lots of little interesting details..
When I first received the katana I posted pictures to reddit also so can also be found there…

Im interested to hold, see and use one of what they call the international version of one of there swords and just ordered their international version Wakizashi..Will be very intersted to see their sashikomi polish the fit and finish of it and the two peice copper habaki in person and Of course I will share here after I’ve had it for a little bit
Thanks for reading my review
