Hello! If anybody can hel and give me some advice regarding the Hanwei Snake Katana - SH8330 (it is also somewere named the Rat snake katana), not to be confused with the Bamboo snake katana, or the green snake katana. I am planing to buy a katana but I would like to buy something that is beautiful, but that can also be used for cutting. Hanwei Snake Katana - SH8330 usualy is selling for around 500-600 EURO, (more or less 500-600 $). In the descriptios of the katana is stated that the key features are: - T10 high carbon steel blade - Ornamental saya - Blade material: T10 high carbon steel - Overall length: approx. 116 cm - Blade length: approx. 77.5 cm - Handle length: approx. 34 cm - Weight: approx. 1600 g My question is: Does anybody have experience with this katana, and is it suitable for cutting practice, Tamashigiri, or back yard cutting, is it durable or brittle?

500 to 600 for a snake is a pretty good deal. Dont think hanwei makes them anymore. Their t10 is a pretty safe bet, but the snake im rather sure has more of a shinto esque blade. Will be fine for mats but Id be careful with harder targets like bamboo. I use a tori for kenjutsu and it handles great, thats never really a problem with most hanwei swords.
Id actually jump on it as the sword itself is relatively rare and they arent even listed on cas iberia anymore. However if its your first katana, id recommend getting a cheaper beater sword just to practice some cutting and movements with. So id recommend getting this and then buying a 150 dollar musashi or something similar

Is it the Battlemerchant offering? They have access to discontinued Hanwei models and with the old prices. I always was tempted too. But sorry, no experience. Maybe the 1600 g weight is with the saya, otherwise too heavy.
