The dealer has a few swords with him, he said this sword is the first time it's been to a show. I'm just not sure if it's 100% authentic.
Handle will need redone for sure. He said it has civilian mounts?
Not sure of the writing on the Saya, Google translate didn't help much.

I think the sword is genuine. I am not too well versed in WWII stuff as I focus on much older antiques. I would believe the signature is - 関佐光信光作 - Seki Sakō Nobumitsu Saku, cant blame the seller from identifying Sakō as Sukemitsu as that is how I first read it too. Sometimes Japanese characters can be read in several ways.
Here is the entry for him from Seskos Swordsmiths:
NOBUMITSU (信光), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Gifu – “Nobumitsu” (信光), real name Sakō Shin´ichi (佐光信一), born June 24th 1905, student of Kojima Katsumasa (小島勝正), he worked as guntō smith and died July 21st 1993, ryōkō no retsu (Akihide)
As I don't really focus on this stuff I can't comment price more than for under 1000$'s is generally quite rare to find anything anymore, cheap for a katana in the current market. There are lots of people wanting WWII items.

Just came accross this sword in Reno today. What are your thoughts on it being authentic and if the price is in line. Thanks everyone. Agree with Jussi. IMHO, a bargain. Did you buy it?

I haven't yet, I will most likely buy it. I just wanted to wait to get a few opinions from people. I know this will possibly cost to update with correct funature My question is it's not a gunto sword right? Because of the engravings and such? I don't want a gunto. I still have lots to learn but I do really like it.

Well I won't get it now, the dealer promised to hold it back until I gave him the information on the sword. I just walked over to buy it and He just sold it to a guy like 20 min ago...
Pretty disappointed. Wasn't very cool of him.
Hunt still continues I guess

In general, sword shows are a pretty safe place to not get burned by a fake. Most of the people know each other or knows somebody who knows somebody. Any con artist would very quickly be discovered and banned. That's not to say you can't get ripped off, just that you won't get ripped off by buying a fake. Most people who regularly go to sword shows already know this, so when you told the vendor that you wanted to check on the authenticity, it marked you as a newb. He may have thought you weren't serious or he may have felt insulted. I will tell you what an old timer told me. You don't go to your first few shows with the intent to buy; you go to meet people, ask questions, and learn. The antique sword community is similar to the martial arts community, if you don't know the rules you can't play the game. I hope I don't sound too harsh, but I'm giving it to you straight.

He asked me to check because he didn't know what it said. He assumed i was a collector as i was walking around carrying my own sword at the show. This was a gun show not a sword show, ive never been to a sword show but assume they are vastly diffrent where as lots of people have fake and counter fit items for sale. He was selling it for a friend that has Parkinsons and could make it there. He asked me to translate the txt for him and post it online to get info since i told him i recently joined a group that could help bring some light to his sword. As far as being a noob, not in the gunshow world. I've personaly been to roughly 117 gunshows this year alone, 3 of which I've seen him at. I hardly doubt he thought I was a newb at his booth. I have 20 tables he has 1. I actually showed him I have the cash as I'm a vendor. We're traveling with over 750k worth of ammo, so money isn't an issue for us. Not sure why he sold it before I came back. Not trying to sound like a poop head but as far as I know I believe he thinks I know much more then I do. Hence why I brought it to this community. Should have bought it faster. Oh well. Next time

You didn't say all that in your post. I've never been to a gun show, but a sword show is a great place to network and learn. If you can make a friend out of an old collector to go to a sword show with, you will significantly increase your knowledge. Also, I always wear a suit and tie. It makes you look serious and professional.

Thanks again and hopefully I can find a friend interested in swords Luke me locally.

Damn, I need to go to some gunshows again. It's legit, converted civilian sword to Gunto. A dealer from NMB sold me one much like it for 1400$, which was a good price, so 900$ is crazy good. The polish could be better but you go to the forum with the sword you have not the sword you wish you had.
My verdict: Buy Buy Buy! buy I might drop by your gunshows now.
Edit: Just saw the 900$ is for the naked out of polish seki. It's still a good, fair deal, just not amazing. I'd still look at it if I were in your shoes, see if it has hagire or other irreprerable flaws, and if okay go Yolo and ask some of my arts and crafts friends for help in making a tsuka and check my bucket of habaki to see if I can get a fitter.

It came with everything I just took picture of it without the Fittings. I wasn't able to buy it it sold shortly after I looked at it.

Well, more chances will come. I'd almost forgotten how good stuff can be found in shows. It's a crap shoot though, this one was a family blade, the other one here sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/69063/described-civilian-officers-sword it is similar looking but that one is only worth 900$ tops. There are some ways to tell though, note how nicely the nakago on this one was cut and how crisp its signature was? That's something only expert smiths can make.
