This rumor seems to come up fairly often. In order to ship a sword from Hungary, you are required to have a certificate from the government stating a description of the sword and that the sword is not a national treasure or relic of Hungary. I have a collection of swords from my father in law that We would like to get to the US. All are mid / late 1800’s to ealy 1900’s. Is this still true?

I did a trade with the forum member baekdosan, who is in Hungary (he was at the time anyway). I received the sword he sent me (to the US) without any trouble. This was a couple years ago, but you could message him and see if he can give you any more info.

I’ve had no issues shipping 19th C. sabers to the US from Hungary. The seller I was buying from was a dealer, though, and was familiar with export paperwork. I don’t remember there being anything unusual; just customs forms/declarations. As I recall, the seal on the paperwork envelope wasn’t even broken. Of course, if some certificate was collected at the border, I never would’ve seen it.
