Today on my kaneie i noticed the saya has a large crack on top of it: Well i can only assume its from yagyu noto, as you turn the saya over and draw it like a tachi. Eventually, the sword is going to cut through its saya and my swordsman days will be over as I will lose all of my fingers. Any way to reinforce this area and prevent that from happening? My first thought would be to wrap it with rattan. Would still be traditional and look good. Never done that myself or where you would get the proper rattan. Good luck.

Sealing the crack and then wrapping with rattan or samegawa would be my solution. I'm going to order a few types of rattan to play with for other projects. I'll let you know what I come up with.

Not at all intended as a negative, but for protecting your hands (and sayas) in the future maybe also investigate the noto technique? In Muso Shinden Ryu, my sensei said that the sword should "float" within the saya during noto. Now, that takes a lot of control and a LOT of practice, but maybe some subtle modification to technique could avoid future issues?

According to the size chart proveded by tozando, I should be using a sword with a 28.5 inch nagasa. This one has a 29.5inch one. Otherwise you are probably correct, i think i am initiating the cut too early
