Here's a teaser for you. I have some vids to edit and there are some clips taken on other devices that I don't have right now. We covered the Dan Dao and some of the techniques of sword vs. spear. I learned a lot! I wish I had a dojo like this where I live. Paris is a long way to go to learn practical application of martial art! And I will state this for the 10,000th time: technique and practice is more important that the specifications of the sword. I won't reveal any secrets here, but suffice it to say that using the nodachi/dan dao isn't how you think it should be. The correct way isn't intuitive and you most certainly need a proper teacher to learn. Huge thanks to forum member Dalaran1991 and Honneur Aux Armes for hosting me at their dojo in Clichy and taking the time for a private lesson. I was truly in the presence of my betters! Enjoy!

Yes, this is a sentiment you repeat very often. I agree with the first sentence. On what basis do you make the other claims? What about this session of yours lets you say that what you saw was the "correct way" and that using the nodachi isn't how others think it should be? Perhaps you need a "proper teacher" to learn the exact things you did in there, but without that clarification you are making bold claims. I enjoy your posts reflecting on the culture of formal JSA, particularly the elements of elitism. But you took some of that mindset with you when you left. You may very well have learned something unique or special to share, and the community is better when we can enjoy and discuss such things. That doesn't mean what you experienced is the correct way. Terms like "correct" and "proper" are easy to throw around and hide behind when trying to avoid criticism, but are more often than not arbitrary.
I'm glad you were able to visit this dojo as well as get a new sparring video up, I'd be interested in knowing more about what you did and learned.

A fair critism and one that deserves an answer.
First, I want to say that I respect you and your point of view, and if the roles were reversed, then I would have the same questions.
The position fom which I come from that supports my beliefs and forms my opinions is two-fold:
First is that I am a world recognized expert in training design and adult education- hence my frequent business travels to Europe and points West.
Second: I have first hand experience having traveled to Paris to meet with the guy that literally wrote the book on the Tao of the Dan Dao. If I pass on a suggestion or insight from that encounter, then you will have to either take it at face value or go to France yourself and experience it as I did.
I will put together a montage of video with narrative, but as I am on a business trip I really have limited time to do it and most likely it will have to wait until I get back to the States. Hopefully at that time your questions will be answered satisfactorily.
And again, everything i say is with respect to you.
