Hi everybody! (every time I write those words, I cannot but hear Dr Nick Riviera's voice in my head...)
I recently got the Valiant-Atrim practical longsword and I would like to do something to embellish the plain pommel: engraving or etching a symbol/logo/etc.
Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
p.s.: I read that the pommel and guard are some sort of stainless steel, is there no way to gunblue that? I like gunblued hilt parts...
Thanks in advance!

I think the only way to blue SS is to heat blue it, and I also do not think etching works very well either. An engraving would work though.

Thank you for the advice Master293.
Acid etching would'nt work on that pommel?
I was thinking of using a dremel tool for engraving...
Anybody else have some advice on how to proceed or on anything else that could be done to customize this pommel?
Thank you in advance.

Stainless steel doesn't take to well to etching due to the fact that it is stainless steel, and resists it quite well.

I tried to gun blue the pommel and guard of my AT-VA practical LS, it worked surprisingly well on the pommel ( it still holds good by the way ), but sadly it was impossible to repeat it on the guard. I posted a pic and some comments here : /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=5235

Thanks for the link, Enkidu! Sorry for your initial disappointment...but your experimentation is profitable for the rest of us -or at least to me- plus: I think your sword still looks great....great wrap job on the grip from DBK! And the pommel really gains from customizing...
As much as I would have liked to blue the pommel and guard, I will turn to some other mean of customizing it...is it dremel time?
Nevertheless, thinking about it, maybe I could engrave the pommel and then gunblue it...hmmm...juggling with the idea here...

Hey, I can offer some advice! I hope I'm not too late. Just found your thread. If you can draw You can do some really nice and detailed drawings with diamond points in a dremel. The ones I have had the most luck with are a tear drop shape. They come to a nice round point, if that makes sense. You can use it like a pen. Use a fairly big tip, about 3-4mm diameter at the fat part. Avoid designs with straight lines, the tips try to runn off continuously, obviously. So go for organic designs that can wear a bit of deviation. If you need to do a straight line or a long curve your best bet might be a large 0.5mm thick diamond disk. All of these parts are available off ebay. Draw the design first with a fine line felt tip pen. The tip is going to try to run off to the right (I think?) so work left to right, so you aren't fighting the natural action. Anchor your wrist, and try to work in a general arc from that pivot, using your finger tips to direct the tip. Rub over it when you're finished with 1200 grit sandpaper, to take the burrs off. If you have any questions feel free to email me or PM me. Just have a go, you'll be proud of what you make. These were all dremel done. I can do a stack more detail than I can with acid, and so much faster and more fun.

Thanks a lot, Brendan!
That is good, helpful and detailed advice on how to proceed! And you're not too late, right on time on the contrary!
I think I will actually go for engraving...after I settle for one design I like...many ideas, hard to choose...maybe the family crest? A stylized fox (Reflingar=Descendant of the fox in old norse)? A crow? Hmmmm...
But thanks again for the kind advice, I'll let you know how it goes and post some pics!
Reflingar p.s.: Nice engavings on your part by the way, love the tree!
