I purchased a Deepeka Lubeck a few months back as a budget project sword for a reenactment kit. It came as dull as can be, the crossguard had sharp edged which bothered my hand, and the grip wrap was a sad flimsy leather strip wrapped and glued on. So I filed and shaped the crossguard a bit more until it was comfortable and aesthetically appealing. Then I tore off the old grip, and redid the wrap with leather over some risers, and gave it a corded look. Next I worked with the scabbard and made a period accurate integrated suspension system with white painted leather. Then I worked with the blade and sharpened it to a nice convex edge. Finally I inscribed the blade with some symbols and Latin on either side. I’m still a newbie to sword ownership and customization, but I actually love this sword now that I put the work into customizing it myself. Excuse the crudeness of the work, I had to do most everything with a file, sandpaper, etc. Also my maille mittens do a number on the leather and furniture.

Wow, that looks super nice! Thank you! A few more things I’d like to do, like a chape for the scabbard and a different belt buckle. But so far I’m pleased! I’ll have to try a few cuts with it just to see how a Deepeeka does.

For a 200dollar piece it already looked like a good deal but those small changes took it up a notch. The grip while minor in look will probably be big for feel and function, at least I like risers on mine. Would definitely be interested to hear how well it cuts and how the weight feels.

I own a Deepeeka Sir William Marshall, which I reprofiled heavily. Despite a lot of electrical grinding, the bevels are still much steeper than on my H/T EMSHS or any of the Albions I used to own, for example. It does cut paper, though. I’ve used that one to bash against 2x4s and cut thick chainmail. Definitely a durable sword.

I suspect this may be a way to offset the lack of a significant distal taper.

I think a chape with the same material as the pommel would blend nicely
