Hi All, I'm not finding much about rattan preservation. I assume that since Yari and such can have a rattan haft, are they just disposable, or was something done to preserve it? I know it can get nasty dry rot internally and shatter. Thoughts?

I keep mine oiled. I would imagine any type will work. I use teak.

Huh. Didn’t know about that. I’ve got several staffs (Bo, 2 jo and a lahti) from Cold Steel. I’ve had them for 30ish years. Just sit on a shelf never used. Will have to get them out and test them. Thanks for the heads up.

I ask, because this is something any SCA person has dealt with. You make a few extra swords or polearms, they sit for a few years forgotten under that half finished pile of projects....and ya need one, dig it out, and it fails. I can't imagine anything that would stabilize rattan would be legal for SCA use, but there has to be a way. I'll try tung oil since I have a ton, and a few pieces of rattan to play with.

I would like to know the results. Your post was welcomed as it is a reminder to oil mine.

Yes, its easy to fall behind on maintenance.... Have you considered going to a higher grade of duct tape?

Lol... For SCA , I have just given up and rotate rattan every year or two, I just make a new one, and beat the old one to death. But I'm toying with using rattan on a 'real' spear...I'm just wondering how to make it last.

Both of my longer spears are of rattan and both have distinctly different characteristics. One is quite light, very flexible, and fast. The other heavier, with no flex to speak of and gives me the sense of more power. Both I think have more than 10 years on them and thanks to you I had a reminder to re-oil.

back when I still did SCA fighting (late 1980s) a friend's father still had a roll of the WWII-era cloth tape used to patch holes in planes during flight. It was similar to a modern Gaffer's Tape, and despite being over 40 years old, was still sticky. There were those of us who referred to it as a holy relic for SCA-folk.

WWII? That sounds like duck tape to me, we use to call it 100 mph tape.

Pat's dad called in 100 MPH tape. It was thicker than the (1980s) modern duck tape and a lot stronger (like modern Gaffer's Tape).

Well, I got my rattan staves out and they all have a nice flex to them. No sound of cracking at all. Like I said they are about thirty years old but I don’t use them. Maybe I’ve just been lucky they didn’t deteriorate. As far as duct tape goes try Gorrila Tape. It’s duct tape on steroids. Stong stuff. They have a variety of other types of tape now but that’s the only one I’ve tried. I recommend it to everyone.
