So museum replicas has a cane with a zinc(?) hammer head. Looks ok, but clearly its glued on, so may be good for ONE strike. So...the question. I'm thinking of building my own out of an existing war hammer. Does this already exist, or are there suggestions for this? One of my concerns is making sure it's rounded enough its not a PITA to hold and walk with. (pain in the a&&) I know a few years back we had posts about Scandinavian walking sticks with a little axe head.
This can be along that line.
Thoughts?

I think my CS warhammer could work. The seperate handle can be replaced with a longer one. The head isn't unconfy to grip (and you can add grip band) and the black coating can hide a bit that it's a hammer. Or find an polehammer and shorten the pole.

Sir Thorfinn, can you post a link to that cane? I just got back from MRL and saw a walking cane with a war hammer head. Picked it up and looked at it but didn’t examine it to closely. Was very light weight so didn’t really interest me. I’ll take my Cold Steel axe head cane or my night watchman cane over it. Also Zen Hydra posted a pick of his war hammer cane a few days ago in another thread. Can’t remember which one atm.

That’s it. Very light weight. I think my CS axe head cane might weigh more but is definitely stronger and is totally polymer.

On the other hand.... Now I need to look at things that I can add to a stick, and shape to my liking. Big Cheap hammers...I'm looking at you! Now I have a reason to hit local estate sales... If any other thoughts come up please post!

Google "Shepherd's Ax." It's a cane with a small hatchet head. They sometimes had a hammer poll.

That is a thought provocative post. And I whiled away probably more time than I should have. Not complaining as I enjoyed the time. Of the two choices in the OP I’d go with the War Hammer Walking Stick mainly because the corners of the head appear more rounded adding to a more comfortable hold and it’s cheaper. If you go that route I suggest changing their rubber tip for a dedicated cane tip. I think there are more interesting walking sticks to be had. But then what you get for the money with the MRL will be hard to beat. I like Andi’s suggestion largely because that bulbous top coupled with the head should be comfortable, assuming one can get their fingers to the underside of the head for support. I’m not sure of the night watchman cane Paul is talking about. I remember some years back something with this name came out and impressed me but for the life of me I can’t remember the details. I did a search and found a large number of canes listed as such but not the one I was looking for. I found the shepherd axe interesting and there are several versions of this but do not think that one is for me. Most if not all had a spike at the proximal end. This would be good on ice but would tear flooring up, the very audible tap, tap, tap on hard surfaces such as sidewalks would drive me up the wall. I’ve been there and done that. It also works the other way, hard surface will in time have an adverse effect on the point. This of course can be changed to something more practical. The one the Skall reviewed, had a tapered shaft the small end being the proximal end, the metal point fell off and he showed using it as a walking stick anyway. On soft ground the stick will sink into the ground. Hard surfaces such as paved roads and sidewalks will quickly tear an unprotected end to shreds. One last thought given to me by Andi and that is extending the haft on my CS Spike Tomahawk ever farther. I made a dry run and decided it would be comfortable if the haft did not protrude as far beyond the head. Then I realized an issue that I later saw a reviewer mention with his shepherds ax and that is the danger of having a, as he put it, unmasked sharp edge. In my case that edge is paper cutting sharp and I keep a leather cover on it.

Pgandy, go to BudK and search “night watchman survival staff/self defense cane.” Sorry I don’t know how to do links. And I’ve used your advice on replacing the hard ‘plastic’ tips with soft rubber ones. Had to buy chair/table leg rubber tips at times.

Thanks. I had to look BUDK up as I had removed BUDK from my bookmarks as they refused my order for a kukri. Ditto for True Swords. In the past I had purchased much from True Swords. Now there is a link between the two companies and True Swords refused my order for a carrying device that I previously bought from them that had worn out. Both refusals were because I do not live in the US although I had given my delivery address as such. I miss the carrying device as it was my favourite. Rubber furniture tip works fine on canes.

Wow! Great ideas! The plumbing wrench made me chuckle. So are most of your tests some kind of big nail, or modded railroad spikes? And I REALLY like the square-ish rock hammer. Is that what you used?

It was actually a mortar hammer, or that's what the eBay seller called it.
Most of my testing was just smacking a board really hard to see if anything loosened up. I don't know if I'm accurate enough yet to, well, hit the nail on the head, but that's a good idea for if the warhammer bug bites me again.

The wrench on a stick is soooo overkill... No such thing! It's either not enough kill or just enough kill!

Well, if ya kill it hard enough, you can measure success by the size of the splatter pattern...
