I've finished one these Han ji with a short haft of a similar size to these. I used some dense (read: heavy) fine grained North American hickory, and bound it in copper wire and synthetic silk cordage. I did some testing with it on my car tire pell, and it's scary how easily it penetrates relatively thick vulcanized rubber. These short-hafted ji would work fantastically against a shielded opponent, as it is incredibly easy to hook and displace the opposing shield with the perpendicular element (beak) and immediately follow up with a thrust from the spear element (top spike). That said, I think I still prefer a longer haft and two handed use.
