Not interested. There's still real historical sabers available, and that price would buy around a third to a half of one, depending on what it is.

Are you looking specifically for a replica of the (so-called) US m1860? First, thanks guys for your thoughts. I was waiting a couple of days to check back in for the answers to populate a bit. As to the question; Yes, replica or real. Although I do have to keep the cost down and would like it to look decent. I don't think I can marry those two points with an antique one. And yeah, that saber that was carried by the average U.S. Calvary man during the Indian Wars, or put it another way, that Chuck Connors had broken in Branded š

Iām not familiar with the movie, and I couldnāt quite get a good look at the saber specifically. Also, Iām not an historian. That being said, a US Heavy Cav (1840) design might also fit your needs. What do you want to do with your sword? For reenactment, the m1840 might actually be more versatile. For casual display, whatever looks nice to your eye is perfect, of course. For cutting, doing drills and the like, youāll probably need to search out an example that doesnāt have the micro-grip so common to Indian replicas. The one you asked about has the tiny hilt and a misshapen grip that, imho, makes it unsuitable for use or display. There are other similarly priced reproās that at least look much closer to the real thing. www.kultofathena.com/product-category/swords/us-civil-war-swords/The antiques have made a huge (to me) jump in price over the last couple of years, putting a sound example with good looks pretty far beyond repro prices. If you plan to do any drilling or cutting, though, the originals are light years ahead in handling and probably worth the difference.

The Cold Steel 1860 saber is not bad, I have one and I like it It's basically the Windlass 1840 with a sharp blade. It's a hugh saber and not a lightweight, but the handling is ok for its size and as it is said not far away from original wristbrakers.

Episodes are on YouTube along with Chuck Connors' more famous series The Rifleman. Basically I want it because I think having that style of saber would be cool for display and some light cutting (the occasional pool noodle, thin water bottle or some fruit) now and then. Thanks for the KOA link, but it seems that all the ones that interest me there also come from Windless. ā¹

I donāt have any issue with Windlass per se. Universal Swords, Cold Steel or other Indian made swords, either.
As far as I am aware, none have a rep for being dangerously constructed, and are okay to swing about while fighting off rebellious pool noodles.
I would just lean toward a model thatās a bit closer in appearance to the original. Again, just my opinion, worth only a little less than it cost. š

It looks like about everyone is out of stock on M1860 sabres. Including your posted link, I didnāt read far enough down yesterday. KoA however does have a CS M1860. Dave Kelly said that the CS came the closest to the originals in his opinion. According to KoA, IMHO, itās a bit heavy and the PoB at 6Ā¾ā is a bit far out to be comfortable. But then this is a cavalry sabre which as a whole tend to be blade heavy. In my opinion CS M1830 would be the better choice. Unfortunately also OOS. The lines are similar to the M1860 but with better statistics and a more comfortable appearing grip. I donāt think that you would go terrible wrong with the CS version, and the only one that I can find in stock. I can think of other swords Iād rather have but they donāt resemble the M1860. Thatās not a put down as I too had the hots for a M1860 and the only way I got it out of my system was to acquire one. And like a katana I donāt think a general collection is complete without one especially if you are American. Hopefully you'll get one with a better blade than the captain had.

Ā Hopefully you'll get one with a better blade than the captain had.Ā Ā š thanks. At one point I was actually thinking of getting a replica sword and breaking it like his swords and putting it on display with some Calvary looking stuff and a picture of Chuck Connors as I was a really big fan of the show, short-lived as it was, as a kid. In the show he later takes it and puts up tip on what's left so it's basically a knife with a sword handle. Oh well, guess I'll just keep looking, or maybe I'll just go for that Windless thing and see if it's good enough for me.

I remember that show! There was a funny, parody song called "Stranded" but the lyrics are a little gross. Google it if you dare!
If you want to have the sword broken and remade into a knife like Chuck Connor, then use a stainless steel SLO replicas. They're a lot more affordable and you can use it for sabering champagne bottles! lol

But hey, we all have to take a trip back to Junior High School now and then. Yeah making that branded display was just kind of a passing thought. And yeah I would definitely get one of those Turkey Creek or similar offerings for much cheaper. As I write this I just looked at The Windlass website and they're offering the 1860 for $196 now. That's including the $18 charge to have it sharpened. Makes me think I should get it before the end of next year when it will probably be nearly $300.

I last heard that song during my senior year of High School, when a teacher got serenaded with it while stuck in a restroom stall with no toilet roll available. Ghastly earworm, isn't it?
