The grip on the St Maurice is thin and a bit uncomfortable. I'm thinking of gluing a thick piece of leather on top of the existing piece to bulk it up a bit. What's the best glue to use? Also, the grip tapers towards the pommel. Any tip on getting a flush even join/seam along the edge? If I cut the edges flush, with there be an issue with a gap if it shrinks a bit?

You can buy tennis racket leather grips for $14 or use synthetic grips for $8. Don't need glue if you pull tight during installation. They also sell sticky back grips. Tennis shop.

I had not considered that! I'll take a look...there's a Sports Authority and a semprini's Sporting Goods not far from me. Much better using something already done than reinvent the wheel. Thanks!

The tennis racket grips looked less like Windlass and more like Wimbledon. So I went with a solid piece of leather and some precise measurements so the seam was almost perfect, than glued the living crap out of it. Worked pretty well....very solid. Time will tell. imgur.com/a/yoyfyGd

Looks good. I've thought about doing something similar with my VA Bristol, I love the look of the grip but it feels a little small with sharpish corners, so maybe a little more bulk will make it feel better.

Just what I did helped a lot. Your hand isn't clenched as tightly and you aren't using as much strength just to grip it so your arm doesn't get tired as quickly. I got fairly thick leather

I use sport overgrip grip band on many of my swords, I guess it's silicone rubber. It's not sticky and easily removable and reusable several times. Good for experiments. I like thicker and softer grips, usually the handling of the sword is improved. I experimented with several grip shapes, hourglass, pistolgrip, bulbs, on single and twohander grips. You can vary the overlapping. This way you can get an idea of the best grip shape and size even if you do a leather wrap later.

With the thickness of the leather, I didn't want an overlap because there would be a huge lip. Luckily it was a fairly simple tapering shape and my day job is graphic artist and I know how to make a label to fit. Measure the circumference at the top and bottom to create two circles. Center them on each other and, provided you have Illustrator, enlarge them so the distance between them is equal to the height of your grip and BINGO you have your arcs.

The overlapping makes sense just for the very thin grip band. I vary from 7/8 to 1/8.
