I did some looking on the internet, seems the consensus is to either stick it in your belt or use one of the belt ring carry devices.
Viking themed movies and TV series often show the same 2 methods of carry.
On the surface it looks like the most logical and handy way to carry it.
However, that sort of leaves a rather sharp edge just about wrist level. At least for me it does. It seems a bit dangerous.
So, did Vikings use some sort of a sheath or edge protector? or were their axes just not that sharp?

Axes were VERY sharp from what I understand and they "probably" used an edge protector. AFAIK there is no hard evidence for them but leather rots obviously and it seems very impractical to not have one when they could easily have one.

I've seen it done this way a lot, I'm not sure how historical it is. But I imagine they just left them bare when about to use them. These are the sort of sheathes I made for my axes

Nice job with the sheaths. Someone just gave me a few scraps of leather. Maybe I will see if I can do the same

I've seen it also have the blade facing behind you in the ring when its worn on your belt.

I don’t think they used any protective sheath when carrying. There’s an account in one of the sagas of someone wounding himself with his own belted axe while mounting a horse.

Found this with a google search. Is this what you might be talking about?

Yeah, I was going to mention this. I doubt the Vikings were particularly safety concious, they probably just stuffed an axe in their belt when they were preparing for a combat situation.

Yea plus it would take way too long to get the sheath off, if they had one on, when raiding.

Yea plus it would take way too long to get the sheath off, if they had one on, when raiding. Not really though. If you're walking down a path and Egill steps out in front of you with a face that says killing is on his mind all you do is swing that axe. Assuming it's just a wooden sheath or edge guard it will crack off when it contacts anything hard, like Egill's head.
