First is a Kris Cutlery Ankun Barong, (Gen 2 or so) that came with a slightly off center blade and so it would rub the side of the scabbard. I sanded the sides of the handle, took some material off the hilt to get better hand alignment and sheath fit, and attached some shrink tubing. The second is a barong with a thinner stock, the blade tip bent, broken handle. I drilled two holes in the tang, attached some pins and glued it to some African hardwood and will go for an octagonal style grip.

I did another rehandle on the 'thin barong' now with a one piece handle, the original bolt has been replaced with a thicker one, and I used the original f errule to replace the mother of pearl inlay that was once on the scabbard.

That grip looks much better and appears to be oval shaped which in my opinion should feel better and aid in edge alignment.

Thank you sir. I did manage to do a 2 test cuts with the rounded handle but I agree I like a flatter handle.

For most, flatter sides with rounded top and bottom, slightly oblong, allows not only for edge alignment, but also for true cuts without the blade wandering. I do worry about that tip which might get stressed against harder targets.

Interesting pieces. I would hazard they were born in the Moroland? Moro "bolos" which when we were in the PI was a generic term for any edged weapon/tool that wasnt an axe tended to be a bit more...exotic. They weren't tools they were weapons for hacking Christians to Alpo.
There are different blades with their own names. Baring Panabas Laring Para Kris etc. But referred to casually they were all "bolos" even though that term is applied to a specific design. Heavy rounded tip often tapering back less wide at the hilt. Basically an elongated hatchet with a sword/machete type handle.
The Laring was my favorite. It's a weapon straight up. Bears some resemblance to a cutlass with Shamshir and Scimitar squeezed in. Cool pieces. Would be interesting to know their history.
