Heads up. After being dropped by Kult of Athena as the maker for Balaur Arms, OTC has been picked up by Cold Steel to make some of the new sword models for 2022 catalog, including the much anticipated kriegsmesser, and the old BA single-edged Viking-era sword. Among CS’s new swords, a new Chinese willow-lead saber and a Moro Kris can also be spotted. The kriegsmesser weighs 3 lbs 5.4 oz, 33.5” blade, starting thickness is 7mm. These stats were copy-pasted erroneously last week as the smallsword’s stats, causing a wave of mockeries. The single-edges Viking-era sword weighs 2 lbs 4 oz apparently, with 30" blade and 1/5" base thickness. The liuyedao (willow-leaf) seems very similar to the Dynasty Forge one, which isn't surprising, given how CS and DF share contractor forges. The 2 new models of tachi are likely from that forge, too. I heard many of the Balaur Arms' models--if not all--were designed by Kult of Athena founder Ryan Whittlinger. It's probably the case for this kriegsmesser, too. I'm not sure how Cold Steel can just contract the maker on this model, perhaps they bought the design from KoA? New sword models and the models with individual stats:

NO THANKS.
Looks like he just ran with some of the designs KOA gave him for Balaur and modified them slightly. The Messer and Viking single edge look exact though.

Wait until Kult of Athena lists new Cold Steel products on their website:

OTC's inconsistency seems like the perfect match for Cold Steel.

Looks like they labeled their Chinese oxtail (niuweidao) as a willow leaf (liuyedao).
Edit I see the stats now. Looks like it lost about an inch in oal while gaining a few ounces over the old DF version. Bummer.
Edit edit Now that I look at it, it’s only about an inch longer in oal than the Hanwei, but nearly 3/4 pound heavier. Yikes. Maybe the listed weight includes the scabbard?
Also Thanks for the info!

I think the PDF guy labeled the liuyedao and niuweidao wrong—accidentally swapped the names of the two.

I wouldn't mind another Natchez Bowie, though... Your bowie collection can rival Matt Easton’s kukri collection!

thank you for sharing. I do like the kriegsmesser still--not sure what to think of IP issues or the steel issues.
It would be awesome if someone would do a production kriegsmesser similar to the Albion Knecht. I bet Albion is wishing they had committed to a higher production number on that model.

That's what I was hoping this particular model would provide for Balaur, but we all know how that situation evolved.
The manufacturer was wanting around $500 for this model, so I would imagine that would be the same for Cold Steel unless they worked out some bulk pricing deals. Not exactly budget, but in the context of Kriegsmessers it's cheap.
The Kriegsmesser market is really empty. Knecht isn't even offered anymore and it was very high priced. Really the only production one I think worth buying is the Landskencht Emporium one, and even that will have a long wait period.
I ended up commissioning one with In'Carius based on a historical example nobody has touched yet.

very interesting. I was somewhat curious about the messer before the OTC controversy wonder how it will be under cold steel. If it was made like the first Balaur runs and for or near their old longsword price around 200-250 it would have been a really good deal.
