I live in south Jersey in a town with a ton of antique shops, I’ll spread the word. Thanks, I appreciate that. This trombone is categorized as a either a relic or an antique with historical significance. It's important that it is recovered. Sad in a way. The Nazis took better care of it than the USPS.

I hope the Trombone turns up...its a valuable piece of history. Rufus, is it yours or do you know the owner? It is possible that it is not exactly USPS's fault as common carrier theft (trains/ships/containers) is skyrocketing, however it is their responsibility. The rise in property crime in this country is alarming to say the least and its getting worse I suspect. This story was also on the front page of the LA Time's yesterday.. www.cnn.com/2022/01/14/economy/la-freight-railroad-theft/index.html"Photos and videos showing piles of empty boxes littered alongside rail tracks in Los Angeles County, California have gone viral as shipping companies say they've seen a dramatic spike in railroad theft. Some of the boxes are packages from companies like UPS, Amazon and FedEx.
Union Pacific, one of the country's largest railroad companies, says it may avoid operating in Los Angeles County following the spike in thefts, which it blames on lax prosecution of crimes. The containers and trains are locked, but can be broken into. Union Pacific said last month in a letter to the Los Angeles District Attorney that it saw a 160% year-over-year increase in theft in LA county. The company claims that a December 2020 special directive issued by District Attorney George Gascón that changed how low-level offenses are prosecuted has contributed to the uptick. Union Pacific said in its letter that in the last three months of the year it made over 100 arrests of "active criminals vandalizing our trains" in partnership with the LA police department and Los Angeles Sherriff department. But Union Pacific, which has its own police department with jurisdiction over the 32,000 miles of tracks it owns, said that even as it has expanded its security resources and partnered more closely with local law enforcement, the problem isn't going away. After being arrested individuals are released from custody within 24 hours, it said."

I am well aware that cargo theft is rampant, both internal and external. Something on the order of a 160% increase in the last 18 months. There's so much that the authorities are overwhelmed and only have the resources to investigate theft in which there was assault or arson involved. With luck, it was recovered sitting safe in some unmarked container like in Raider of the Lost Ark, waiting for somebody to scan it and finish the delivery.
Of all the things I own, I don't feel like I own this instrument. It's more like I'm its caretaker until the next person takes over.

Good news: With little fanfare and no explanation, the trombone arrived at the shop today. It was delivered in an open box, minimal padding, and with the case missing but horn intact. Evidently the thieves weren’t interested in a musical instrument. Where the case ended up is anybody’s guess, but I am at least very relieved and grateful that the horn itself has survived with the only damage appearing to be the valve section bent but repairable. You can see a slight bow in the valve section in the second photo. I want to thank everyone in the community for spreading the word and keeping an eye out for the trombone. Thank you! And a begrudging “thank you” to the USPS for actually recovering and delivering the package (although it was their poor security that caused it to be stolen in the first place). At the very end they followed through and completed the delivery job. This little guy has survived a lot in its lifetime, I suppose a few package thieves are no real challenge 😊.

This is great news to hear! The trombone was the first instrument I ever played. All the way back in elementary school (and middle school). So I've always had a soft spot for them. Glad to see this one has gotten back in the proper hands.
