Hey guys, I'm new on here and after checking out some of the other threads on the windlass qama, a lot of people seem to think it is a great blade to redo the handle on to make a pompeii style gladius. So, I was wondering, what would be the best way, in your opinion, to make a good roman handle and to make it work with the blade. I have taken latin in my school for the past 4 years and thanks to my teacher have developed a fascination with the roman military. So, I really want to have a functional, but fairly cheap roman sword so I can get an idea of how they were used first hand. So, got any ideas?

www.romanarmy.com/rat/index.php ANother excellent source. There's a link to RAT on the Legio XX site, too, but I figured this would make it easier to find.

thanks guys, that firs site I had actually already found, and I have to say it is pretty good. I think I'll probably use that, but I just thought I would look for a second opinion, just in case.
but the second one was pretty awesome too. Lots of good general info. Oh, and kreigschwert, I love that first quote, I have to tell my teacher that one.

The guys at RAT are amazingly knowledgeable about anything even loosely pertaining to Roman history, so you're bound to find something/someone of help over there. As for the quote, I literally started laughing out loud when I first read it at Strongblade's website, so I emailed Roberto there and asked if I could add it to my signature here. There's lots of humorous stuff on their site, but that's the best, in my opinion. ;D

Yeah, I'm sure I'll check there tomorrow sometime during school. Maybe lunch or my TA period. But yeah, I swear, if I tell Ms. Lewis, my latin teacher that quote, she's going to fall over laughing.

Hey guys, something just occured to me. I know that I need to redo the tang as well as the handle, and it seems like a lot of people are recomending slimming it down and welding on a bolt. but won't this make the tang weaker? Should I just go to a smith and get him to reshape it for me?

You'll need the extra length for the pommel, and I wouldn't worry at all about a weld on a blade as short and light as the Qama. If done well, welds can be perfectly fine even on much larger heavier blades (like Lutel swords, for example). Just make sure the weld is clean and well executed and that the blade isn't overheated in the process. I'm not sure the best way to do this, but perhaps wrapping the blade from the shoulders down in a soaked towel would work. I'd take it to a welding shop, personally, and tell them what you want, along with stressing the importance of not damaging the blade's temper. I'm sure they'd have a way of doing it that would suit you.
