Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.

I've been looking around for a dojo / HEMA school in my area and there doesn't seem to be anything I can participate in. There's a school in Eustis that's well accredited, but my work schedule (I work late 4 times a week) and their class schedule, plus being almost an hour and a half away from me, makes it impossible to attend. The next closest school seems to be almost 2 hours away.
Just wondering if anyone on the forum here knows of someone giving lessons in my area. I think it's probably easier for an individual to give lessons, like a practicing musician giving guitar lessons, than opening a brick and mortar school and having to keep a certain number of students just to keep the lights on. I realize it's not a very popular sport and a dojo that gives classes is probably going to be much harder to find than, say, a tae-kwon-do or MMA or other martial arts class that probably won't include bladed weapons which are a dime a dozen, but may end up being what I do.

You may have already found this, but just in case: www.hemaalliance.com/club-finders(looks like there's a few around orlando - you'd have to contact them to see if they're active, etc Some of these are really more like clubs than dojos; small groups of people who get together to practice/train, but can still be a good source for learning)

Hi I'm also in the same situation. I live in Port Orange and can't find anything local. The school in eustis is the only school around, other than Orlando kendo. I'm more interested in iaido and or kenjitsu. Because of my work schedule and traveling( traffic) not really feasible. I'm considering online training, which I know isn't anywhere near the same as being in a dojo. I wish I could find an individual or (individuals) to train with.

Yeah, not exactly a popular pastime or sport these days...not like the gun clubs! My daughter is in Ft Pierce and is driving an hour south twice a week now for a HEMA place in Palm Beach that she says is really nice! Starting with Scottish broadsword, but they have all sorts of different weapons training available. Too far for me, but she's willing to make the drive. There's too many subtle movements and balance issues for me to attempt anything online or by YouTube beyond some simple flourishing techniques to make it LOOK like I know what I'm doing. It's hard to know what you're doing wrong without an outside trainer, especially if you want to cut or spar with someone. Too wide or narrow of a stance will make edge alignment difficult and you'll be sending your pool noodles into orbit. And without an actual person to spar against..well, what's the point (no pun intended!)? So I guess I'm waiting like you.

Most people I know of whom are a popular club are usually in miami unfortunately, many places closed down during covid and never came back, to many, not to mention their not exactly common either. Usually your either fortunate enough to be close to a good club or you can't really go anywhere, sad reality. Especially when you start talking about a dedicated craft like german longsword or Lecküchner's messer. Usually its just some jumble of a show of a sport. Fake karate and "defensive" classes "teaching". But anyways, your probably just better off taking a certain amount of time off, if you work, and spending time in miami if you can find somewhere cheap and safe, literally not worth the gas otherwise just me though. I always found it better to just get a practice dummy and start training on your own but by a instruction given by a professional or historical treaty(ies) or both, but in every form imaginable not just from a book but active sort of showing of whatever, Blood and Iron Hema is known for this. But I think there are a few in orlando. Just not really much in Florida sadly I've seen more variety in parts of North Carolina.

I love watching aido and kenjutsu on the web. I know there is still nothing around here. I'm in Edgewater, by the way. Close to the Oak Hill line. Have you started anything online yet, or are you still kind of in limbo?

Still in limbo. There is a HEMA school in the Orlando area. I think hoping for something more local is a bit of a pipe dream.
