Hello! I recently recieved a saber from my grandfather, who told me that he recieved it from his father-in-law. He wanted to know the origins behind it. He did some research of is own, but all he learned was from a museum curator who told him it might be from around the War of 1812. The sword has plenty of markings in various places, but I can't say I know the meaning of any of them, so I've decided to check with those who would have a but more knowledge than me. The pommel has what seems to be either a lion or a dog of some kind, I can't quite tell. This made us both assume that the saber is British, but our amateur guesses might be wrong. Pictures below: imgur.com/a/APBFiaOThanks for any help! Edit: Spelling

Looks late 19th German to me, few difference from a Prussian artillery saber perhaps one of the other German pre-unification states. Someone will know here for sure. Doesn’t look British though.

Agree with Jack, looks late 19th Century German states. Probably a NCO's sword with the Crown over N proof mark and crossed out markings. The Swedish also unit marked their swords, but the often display the three crown coat of arms.

Welcome aboard It is certainly not war of 1812 era by any stretch of imagination. Some curators simply don't know any better. I'm lousy with interpreting the unit markings but these have been stuck out once, leaving us L.G.H. (Hussars?) Also though you have a crown over 78, which would be 1878 and William I German Emperor and King of Prussia. The beast is a jawless lion. Where it has unit markings, my thought would be an NCO sword but I don't know these well. As others have mentioned, it may not be Prussian at all. So, the other end of the century for this one. Cheers GC

A view not being shared is the other side of the hilt and langet. Might it have crossed swords or lances on the langet? Or other motif?

Similar to the other side, there's a box where there could be some sort of image such as in the pages you provided, but it's empty. Thank's for all the responses so far. You all have definitely helped point me in the right direction with the similar swords you all have posted.
