Here is a side by side view of two recent Gladii I made. On the Left: A 1st Century Fulham Gladius. Made of 1095 High Carbon Steel. It have a Hand Carved Black Walnut Guard and Pommel with a 6 sided chiseled finger grip Grip made of Premium Holly. It has an inset brass guard plate and brass pommel finial and washer. On the Right: A 1st Century Mainz "Leaf" style Gladius also made from 1095 High Carbon Steel. It has a Hand Carved Guard and Pommel from European Boxwood. The Grip is a 6 sided finger grip carved from Camel Bone. The inset guard plat is solid bronze. The Pommel Finial is a historically accurate Finial from Magdelena and is lost wax cast in bronze with two bronze rings and a bronze washer. The Fulham on the Right is believed to be a later model of the Mainz and finds itself historically between the Mainz GLadius and the Pompeii Gladius. It is a narrower blade and is shorter than a Mainz. Both of these blades are Hollow Ground, a tricky feat on a blade of this size and shape.
