Anyone else into paintings? I’ve always appreciated paintings and over the last year and a half have gotten more into them as a side effect of becoming obsessed with epic doom metal, which often features kick ass album art. One of my new favorites (which by the way was used as the album art for Atlantean Kodex’s “The Course Of Empire” album, itself inspired by the American painting series from the 19th century) is “Army” by Mariusz Lewandowski. I’m thinking of getting a print poster of it for my room.

I know this is cliche, but "Starry Night" by Van Gogh is top of my list. Not only is it stunning, knowing the context of its creation provides a powerful window into the mind of the trouble artist who created it.

I know this is cliche, but "Starry Night" by Van Gogh is top of my list. Not only is it stunning, knowing the context of its creation provides a powerful window into the mind of the trouble artist who created it. You should look into the story of his sister-in-law Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. If it wasn't for her, we wouldn't have any Van Gogh paintings at all (or a bunch of Monets and Gaugins). She saved his brother from burning them all after he died because she "kind of liked them". There is a photo somewhere of her with the curator of the British museum in 1920 after she sold him the last two paintings she still had. The photo is of them in her living room in front of the fireplace with "Starry Night" on the wall to the left, and "Sunflowers" on the wall to the right. Not bad livingroom decor I must say.
