Has anyone had experience (good or bad) with Windlass riveted chain mail?
I am looking for some mail to be used primarily as part of a costume. But I would like something that would give some protection while learning to cut.

If the main reason is costuming, you might want to look into Aluminum. It's lighter, and I believe cheaper in some cases.
Also, unless you're going for a STRICTLY historically accurate costume, butted maille will suffice. It's not as protective against serious attack, but as light protection during cutting, and for light sparring, it's fine, and DEFINATELY much cheaper than riveted.

Not sure if you are still in the market for mail. I found during my tenure distributing Windlass products that their riveted alumnium mail is not really worth the expense. The QC on their riveting process is poor and you will end up losing links here and there. I have tried out alot of mail and there were not very many I was really parcial to, with the exception of the very expensive and very heavy flattened wedge riveted. For cosplay/larping, I have found that www.ringmesh.com sells the most desirable mail to have. It's superlightweight, very comfortable, looks good, and you do not lose links. All their stuff is custom made to size, so you dont have to worry about a shirt being too loose or too tight. I've had a hauberk from them for a few years now that has gone through alot and I have yet to lose a ring. Additionally, they offer a lifetime warranty on their products. Lose any rings or develop a problem, they fix it - for life; no questions asked. One last spiff is that the Ringmesh is actually is made to stop cutting/stabbing attacks, and it does so with the fraction of the weight of steel or alumnium. It's not historically accurate due to each ring being welded without a seam in it, but it is in my opinion, the best mail out there for cosplay/larping/faires.

Butted is OK as long as it is hard steel, not aluminum or zinc-ion. Soft mettle opens too easily. However, if you only plan to use it as protection when practice-cutting, it should be good enough. Von Sussen has flat-riveted mail shirts for about $400. sussen.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page15.htmlMail is not ideal for serious sparring anyway. Even with a gambeson you will fell the impact. Especially over bony areas like joints. Make sure you use hard elbows. I recommend a gambeson with a coat of plates. Essentially I am advising you to use 15 th century technology to protect against 12 th century fighting styles. Look here for an idea: /index.cgi?board=otherweaponreviews&action=display&thread=6909

From the research I've done, Windlass' armor is outsourced to "....." Pm me back. Don't want to piss offf the windlass Gods. I've got a shirt of wedge riveted blackened mail from that company that shall remain unnamed. It'll more than take a sword strike... HCT

HCT again. FYI-I also own a butted hauberk...GUARRANTEED to split against a blow from a sword.(sharpened or not) A "Ringmesh" shirt however... ...it'll stop virtually any blade. NOT historically accurate, unless one considers a mithril suit historically correct. I've all three... ...looking to off two of them. Be well, don't take any wooden nickels, have a good night. HCT

If you don't need riveted mail, don't buy it- as far as what MRL offers, my understanding is that historically accurate mail was flattened then wedge riveted; I have a flat-ring shirt that is riveted using modern rivets but the look and feel are basically the same; the shirt is heavy, weighing in at around 30lbs but its riveted!
For costuming purposes and light cutting practice, a butted shirt should fill that gap nicely. Aluminum is lighter but also more prone to opening (for butted).
