You might want to send MichaelRS a PM. He’s been dealing with them.

it depends on what you want and are expecting. they make functional weapons that in my opinion are reasonable quality for up to $250, anything more and I'd look elsewhere. in my opinion, they lack refinement and fall short on fit & finish compared to what else is available in the current market. if you're looking for an entry level sword for under $300 that you can have customized and delivered in a reasonable time frame, they are pretty reliable but if this will be your "heirloom custom creation", I'd go somewhere else.

Speak of the devil and he shows up 😁 While certainly not the last word I believe Hanbon Forge to be extremely competitive in the sub 300 category in most all areas. I have no personal experience with other vendors at that level, however I have seen/heard MANY reviews and commentary regarding several other that has allowed me to a form that opinion. If you're looking for a decent sword with the usual production quality "customizations", I recommend them. Other than the usual fixture customizations they do custom blade lengths and custom tsukas/handles and Custom Bo-Hi lengths. For example, their standard wakizashi is 20 inches/50 cm (rounded I'm not dealing with fractions of each), but if you want one that's 40cm or 60cm they can do that. And if you want a short (ko) katana, that is 62 cm (their standard one being 28 in./71cm) with a 7 in or 13 in tsuka, they will do that also or any reasonable combination of lengths for blade and tsuka that you can think of. All for a modest surcharge. I believe the blade length surcharge for a custom length blade is $25. But that is about as fancy as their business model allows them to get. So far since April I'm 5 swords into them: 3 Katana and 2 wakizashi. One Katana and 1 wakizashi are 9260 steel the rest are 1060. As long as you keep your expectations reasonable for that price point I don't think you will be disappointed. Below are links to my first and last swords I got from them. With the second link there's also a little story that I believe speaks to their customer service. If you have any questions you can ask them here or PM me. Be patient for the response as it may take me up to 24 hours since I check in here only once or twice a day, unless something's going on. I definitely check in the during evenings California time. I'm no expert on swords so this is my humble opinion. I bought a tanto from them & I'm happy with it & considering the low price I think its a good deal. The quality of the work seems excellent to me although I find it to be a little heavy. Maybe thats just my expectation. Shipping was reasonably fast especially considering it was Chinese New Year but they never notified me that it shipped & I never got a tracking number. Build time was quick. The only place I would fault them is in communication. There was none in spite of my repeated emails inquiring about their quenching process. They acknowledged my order with an email but thats it.

The op has not been back on this forum since last summer, but other people might be asking themselves the same question. Cottontail customs had a pretty good answer, my experience has been hit or miss.
