I first heard a few weeks back on KoA sword review of them no longer being able to get tatami. I was very surprised and thought maybe it meant temporarily until the reviewer mentioned it being gone. Done. I looked online at the store I’m St. Pete FL that sells and they r out. I went I. Their FB page and it said muchen tachi totami is officially gone too.
Can anyone clarify if this means only certain kinds of tatami r no longer being made and sold? All tatami?
Thanks.

Supplier for Mugen Dachi (green mats) in China went out of business. Mugen Dachi is/was heavily used as a standard training & competition mat in JSA (outside Japan) and HEMA.
There are container shortages and huge container price-increases from Asia to USA. This is affecting shipping for all other mats from Asia and Japan, including the USA dojos that import their used tatami omote from Japan.
The mats still available at lower prices are soft brown wara mats, similar to a beach mat, and below Mugen Dachi in resistance. Fun to cut, but not a good training tool for technique feedback. They might be ok to judge hasuji, angles, and placement and build confidence for novice cutters.
The few "good" (rebadged Mugen Dachi) mats selling online are ~ $25 each, even in bulk, and those will be gone too. Some of the practitioners I know are cutting bamboo during the shortage. Others stocked up in 2020 and early 2021.

Thanks for the replies. So do you all think this is a temporary shortage or permanent? I know costs around the world have increased for everything imported, but trying to figure out if this is really final or if those who do tatami cutting on a regular basis think it will return sometime down the road?

I suspect temporary shortage, but new prices may stay higher than they once were. With that supplier folding there is now a vacuum in the industry that I expect another company to fill. That may take time, and they will likely charge more to make up for start up costs. If people happily pay that price, why ever lower it when they break even? In my mind it's the same as the shortage of .22 LR ammo we had in the US many years back. It used to be you could get 500 rounds of Winchester White Box for under $13 at Walmart. Supply later caught up with demand, but check out prices now: www.bulkammo.com/rimfire/bulk-.22-lr-ammo

Hello Forum... Straw beach mats. might hold you over till you find Tatami .. www.windycitynovelties.com/straw-beach-mat.htmlYears ago.. I had a friend that worked at a Waikiki Hotel. He often found "hardly used" beach mats in the hotel trash. Many were clean and looked new, and, saved them for me. How fortunate yea.. He gave me a lot. I had to be sure that there was no sand..( scratching the blade during cutting. )

Does anyone know if these r more likely to scratch blades than regular used tatami? Soaked first for 12-24 hours of course…
