so to my understanding bohi were made to reduce weight (and the tachi kaze) but where the originals drifted in ground on a wheel or just chiseled out maybe before the quench

I strongly suspect that the Longquan blades from all suppliers, are being done with a semi-automated surface/o.d. grinder jig, from the lower price and uniformity of the blades, their unokubi zukuri in particular. Structurally, it's just as good, but the Japanese handwork is more impressive to contemplate.
