Hey everyone, I am new here but I have been a lurker for years. I like swords from every period in history, and have owned everything from wall-hangers to functional reproductions. Recently I have gotten rid of 95% of my collection, and I want to get some more serious swords from Albion. I have two arming swords on order from them, a Doge and a Machiavelli (I love the Italian aesthetic) and I am looking for opinions on which longsword to get.
I do plan on cutting tatami with the sword, but most of its life will be as a display piece to be mounted alongside the Doge and the Machiavelli. I have heard good things about the Brescia (it seems like its the best jack of all trades longsword Albion makes) and I believe it would really round out the Italian trio, but there is another (rarer and less expensive) longsword Albion makes that I am very curious about, the Munich.
I really love the look of the Munich, and from the little I have read it seems to be the best handling longsword there is, yet it trades a bit of cutting ability for thrusting ability. Has anyone cut tatami with one? How did it do? What should I do (if you were in my position)? Do I go all in with the Italians? or should I save some cash and get the Munich? Or spend a little more and get a gothic Munich?
I have been thinking about this for a couple of months now, and really cant decide. Any insight on these two swords would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone,

I can't really contribute much, except that I got the opportunity to handle a Munich at Combat Con and oh my god was it nice!

If you haven't already read this I highly recommend it because the Albion Brescia Spadona was part of the cutting performance tests against various target types i.e. light to hard. myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.31645.html

If your open to suggestions I might reccomend something from VA, The German is pretty close in specs, plus you get a nice scabbard to go with it. Tell Sonny you want the guard off their Irish Ring hilt and you've got the munich. I admit its hard to beat Albion in terms of balancing, but as someone who's own both Albions and VAs, VA comes close lol
If the Brecia starts to catch your eye, I might also recommend Lockwood who also has a similar sword that is very well renown for its handling

Personally I'd go for the Brescia. Especially if you're going to cut with it. Saying that, the Munich is definitely an incredible sword and would look amazing on a wall. Agree about VA, their swords are top notch, and their Irish Ring Sword is stunning.

I own an Albion Munich with a half-wire wrap. I also own multiple other Albions and custom swords of a comparable quality. The Munich is currently my favorite sword. It just feels "right" when I hold it, and to a degree that my other blades don't quite match. I can't promise anyone else will experience this bit of ephemeral esoterica, but of the two swords inquired about I would more strongly recommend the Munich. Update: The Munich cuts quite well. It's obviously not a dedicated cutter, but cutting near its CoP allows it to cleanly cut bottles, tatami, and paper rolls. The tip is strongly reinforced, but also frightfully accute. The weight distribution is such that it simultaneously feels strong and robust, but also incredibly nimble. I also own an Albion Doge, and I think you will be very happy with it. It's like two swords in one, because it handles very differently depending on your grip. It is truly a transitional sword in a manner which has to be felt to be understood.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I feel like before I made this post I was more in the Brescia camp, but now I am leaning more towards the Munich, especially after seeing Lockwood's version of the Brescia, the bronze and purple hilt look incredible on that sword, I also like the VA ring pommel sword.
Hydra I think you and I have very similar taste in swords. Your Doge is the first I have seen pictures of, outside of Albion's marketing photos. I cant wait to get mine, especially after reading your comments on its handling.
EDIT: I just saw that you have a gemstone placed in the pommel on your Munich, it's funny because I had thought about doing the same if I go with the Munich. Now I am sure we have similar taste in swords haha.

Ah, sorry Nathaniel my eyes must have been playing tricks on me when I first saw It. Now that you pointed out the grip color I can clearly see the difference in tone between it and the scabbard. That is a beautiful sword you have there.

Well, after much deliberation I have made my decision. I put down a deposit on a Gothic Munich (satin finish, black grip) through KOA, looking forward to getting my hands on it next year haha. Thank you everyone for helping me make my decision.

Nice choice. Welcome to the long wait. I have had an Albion Prince on order for two months now. It is driving me crazy

Haha! Yeah, the wait is going to be brutal haha. I'll have time to get better with my feder though, which I hear handles similarly to the Munich.

Congrats on the order soloknight6, between the two I would probably make the same choice. I have never been able to find the cross-gaurd style on the Brescia appealing to me, which is weird cause no other cross-gaurd type really bothers me, just that one.
captainh, I orderd an Albion Prince as well in June, along with a Chevalier and yeah, the wait is killing me. I find the first 6 months hard, and then the second half flies by fairly quickly in my experience.

I have bought two Albions from the classifieds here since and it has not calmed the "wait anxiety" of the swords on order haha soloknight6, I look forward to a review of it when you get it in. I hear the Munich is one of the best Albions to own.

of course! I plan to do full video reviews on the Munich, the Doge, and the Machiavelli when they eventually arrive, including some tatami cutting.

For me it's no contest. Brescia by a mile.
I base that purely on personal aesthetics. But it's really no contest. Perhaps that's why a Balaur Arms Italian is currently my favorite sword. It's a Brescia knock-off.
I'm too poor for Albions. If I bought one, my wife would end me with it. But man I love that Brescia.
Congrats on your purchase!

a Rengenyei standard feder Owning both, I can say that the Regenyei standard feder doesn't handle like the Munich, it has much less blade presence and is a bit lighter. The Trnava light would be a better match. Btw, I agree with your choice. I own the Munich and have cut with the Brescia. It does cut a bit better (more easily) but the Munich cuts quite well and does everything else better than the Brescia. Stouter, better in the thrust, better point control and more powerful in the cut.
