I have one and like it. It’s not an eye pleaser being stamped from sheet metal, but there lays its virtue. It’s thin allowing for easier penetration and improved slicing ability. Many, perhaps most, do not like the black finishes CS puts on. I’ve retained them on my tomahawk, machetes, and the spear. I find those finishes durable and outstanding at preventing rust. That is important here in the tropics where Mr. Rust is an ever present, unwanted companion. As a side benefit I believe a flat black finish is harder for the eye to follow than a shiny finish. I got the short version as I was traveling and disassembled would fit in my luggage and planned to get a longer haft later but decided to keep the short one. For a long time it was my primary home defence weapon when used with my buckler, since replaced with a 23” round shield. I use to joke calling them my make shift Rochin & Tinbe. I have done only limited modifications. One was to spray the backside mat black to hide the exposed end of the haft. The other was to add furniture tacks to know the blade orientation without looking. It’s also has a small decorative effect. Backside Frontside Tacks Leather sheath

I like it more shiny, well done!. Odds are good it's paint, but you could email Cold Steel and ask them. But if it turns out to be paint, thats easy! Polish it up then to a little acid etching and you'll have eye candy.
