Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone had any tips for keeping an ash pollaxe haft in good nick.
Is teak oil the way to go, or will linseed oil do fine?
I'm not too worried about historical accuracy here, more what works most effectively.

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for keeping an ash pollaxe haft in good nick. Is teak oil the way to go, or will linseed oil do fine? I'm not too worried about historical accuracy here, more what works most effectively. Can’t help you with what to treat ash with, never worked with it and not sure I’ve seen it in person. But anytime I see teak or linseed oil I feel the responsibility to give out some information. First there is no such thing as teak oil. There are products calling themselves as such but they are usually linseed oil or another oil with additives. The important thing I need to convey is to dispose of any rags used in linseed oil need to be either dried out, not in the sun or in any extreme heat. They can and have spontaneously combust. Have seen a on the news a deck burned down because rags with linseed oil in the were put under deck. Saw a demonstration also on the news where they put a linseed rag in a cardboard box and set it in direct sunlight. iirc it caught fire in a little over two hours. Sorry the long post but always want to keep people informed and safe especially my sword brothers. Good luck with getting an answer to your question.

I have used both Linseed oil and Howard Feed and Wax. Like them both. Usually do the Linseed oil first. Then use the Feed and Wax as a maintainer.

I agree. This is a wonderful product. I like to apply it with the finest steel wool, let it soak, and then wipe off the excess.
