well after seeing the first RR spike knife that i did my dad said he wanted one. when i asked how he wanted it done he said he wanted me to leave the head of the spike on and pit it a little ( apparently it makes it look nostalgic). this project being before i upgraded my forge i was stuck using this. after about an 2 hours of work. then i began flatten the steel to form the blade. after twisting tweaking the shape on the anvil it was to the grinder and files. then i started on the stand that was going to go with it. polishing went rather quick probably due to the low carbon content. i went up to 600 and found that to be pretty shinny so i left it at that and wrapped the handle in leather. i also stained the stand a red-ish brown to go with the leather wrap. sorry for all the pics but i think they do a much better job of describing the project. what ya think?

Looks good. Not sure why he wanted it pitted, seems like a waste to me, but it's his knife.
How's the edge?

Someone's really getting the hang of it!! Huge congratulations, darkslyde. +1K!
Is that a straight hamon I see along the edge, or just the lighting?

Thats a nice RR spike knife DS! A well deserved karma for you.
I particularly like the handle wrap. A clever addition, and a nice little individual touch over a normal RR spike knife. The stand is great, too.
What did you do with the heat treat on this one?

no swords for a while yet. as far as the heat treat nothing special just heated the blade up to cherry red and then dropped it into cold water.

Hey, the 'blacksmith knife' look is still VERY popular Nicely done; and I can see that you put the extra effort into making it a good knife instead of just ripping it out in a hurry. Karma from me, too.

I think it would look better without the leather wrapping.

the leather wrapping kinda hides a few "imperfections" on the handle.

Our railroads don't use the same sort of securing spikes; they are either a funny shaoe or arent hardenable. They must exist in this country somewhere though. There's some disused rail line near where I live which I may search...
