It seems I may owe trueswordsman an apology. After a great deal of research I have come to suspect the same thing he does. It looks as if the guard and pommel are quite possibly coated copper. I intend to find out for sure before I make a verdict. T.swordsman, my apologies for dimissing your views so quickly before.

No worries. I think people forget I have been in the sword business for over 10 years and see nearly every model from every brand in the sub $300 market.

Great review Avery!
I have never been a big fan of this sword, solely based on the MRL's poor photographs. They clearly hide a great deal with respect to this sword. Your review shows it in a completely different light. It looks like a great find. After seeing your review, I would consider this as a potential addition to my "Viking Wall" display. Congratz!

Thanks, Shooter, for the compliments. I've also been looking at their swedish vikng blade. I cant come to a decision about it ,though. Are their opinions out there about it? I'll probaly end up taking the plunge with it, but if anyone knows anything about it I surely woud appreciate any info.

From what I can tell from my piece, the underlying metal is bronze

Yep, great and thorough review. I was always curious about this sword. I ended up going for the Hanwei Godfred but I didnt realize that the Leuterit had a peened tang. After seeing some pics of broken Godfreds...I think I would have gone for this one instead. Again, great review Avery. Have a karma

Thanks Jak, the hanwei godfreds are they not peened? I debated between and this one, but chose this because the price. I did plan on picking up a godfred soon, but now you have curious. I also have been looking at the windlass swedish viking, as I think it is peened as well. Again, thanks

Far as I can tell the Hanweis are peened. Mine never twisted, anyway, but that might just be the epoxy. Hotspur broke his early model, so he can vouch one way or the other for that particular run. I'm pretty sure mine was peened, though, and they definitely fixed the blade breaking issues. Mine was a fantastic sword.
The Windlass offerings have never really caught my eye too terribly. If I had to pick a Viking sword from Windlass, it'd be their old Loiten, which is LONG gone now. Other than that, maybe the Ulfbehrt, but this particular model is definitely third place.

The hanwei godfreds have a screw on nut that goes down inside the pommel and then they put a nifty little cap on it to hide it.

Interesting. Maybe I won't buy another one, then.

Thanks fot the compliment, Fatecaller. T.Swordsman, do you know for sure whether the swedish viking that windlass offers is peened? I'm sure I wont buy the hanwei now! Why would they do that? Its a beauty of a sword, and dont get me wrong alot of swords have threaded tangs, but still. You cant beat a peen for solid construction. IMO.

No the Godfreds are not peened, the pommel is threaded. And the threaded part is rather small and weak looking. Ive used mine a fair bit and its still tight but there have been broken ones. Ill see if I can dig up one of the old threads....

Hotspur's was one of the older models; they've resolved many of those issues long ago. The only problem now is that bloody pommel. If Hanwei would just work on their tangs and peen their stuff (they're starting to use solid pommels, at least) they'd be great.

Hotspur posted a pic of a broken pommel...the threaded part snapped off. I know they redesigned the blade a bit but Im pretty sure tang/pommel construction hasn't changed

Oh, you're right, I forgot he tore off the one pommel, too. I remembered him breaking the blade and thought that was what you were referring to. I hadn't checked the link since doing so on my phone is a pain. Silly Hanwei.

Man, thats kinda depressing. I guess all we can do is hope they fix the pommel/tang construction. Unfortunately I wont be buying one untill I know they have.
