I have not cut tatami with an arming sword before, but I got an opportunity to do that by joining the sword and buckler group’s test cutting session. The first mat is cut with only basic cuts, but for the second mat I move on to a double cut (i.e. a rising cut immediately followed by a second cut through the loose piece of tatami before it falls).

Nicely done! Those are very clean cuts.
I like that shirt, by the way. Very festive.

Outstanding cutting. I have that sword, sharpened it, and thought it to be a good cutter but unfortunately does not compare with that. Seeing that difference in sword and style doesn't start my day all that well. Oh well, back to my backyard plastic bottles.

Like a hot knife through butter. Great cutting man!

Well executed cuts. Were you using the edge the sword came with or did you modify/improve it?

Well executed cuts. Were you using the edge the sword came with or did you modify/improve it? Thank you. The sword isn't mine. The owner of the sword bought it unsharpened, used a slack belt grinder to shape the edge and then used a Work Sharp for the final edge.

When it comes to actual cutting tests with euro swords, how the edge got there is important to many of us.

I have a WS. It’s been a while since I’ve used that sword and cannot remember the details. I doubt if MRL sharpened it. If so, I refreshed it using my standard 25° edge. It is my edge, no question about not being MRL’s, it’s too smooth. While it cuts beautifully it is not in the class with the one in the video, nor am I. I say that with never having cut a mat. It would be interesting to know the grind angle and details of such.

Nice cutting! From your photo I can see the owner has done some extensive work with the edge bevels. I recently cut with the Windlass type XIV, and it definitely needs some work to apple seed out that secondary bevel and thin out the portion above the termination of the fullers. Overall it's quite competent for an arming sword, though the lack of proper distal taper makes a slower sword due to the mass distribution. It feels quite different from a langesmesser for sure.

Thank you. Yes, there was a lot of work done with the slack belt grinder. That was actually done just before one of the earlier test cutting sessions and the slack belt grinder is visible in the background in the video where I cut fabric-wrapped tatami.
