A HEMA coach criticized that I'm only good at sparring with foam swords, not understanding the spirits behind Realistic Sparring Weapons. So this video demonstrate how close the RSW are made to their respective real swords, and how exactly the same one can use them at their real sword speed and power for sparring. The end result is as long as you can do it with your RSW, you can do it with your real swords, at the same reach, speed and power.

Loved the side-by-side comparison. Excellent way to show that the same technique, speed, and power and be applied with either tool.

Informative and well done, as always. Thanks.

Thank you very much. I may missed in this video that they actually are of the same point of balance too, not just total weight. :) Otherwise the speed of the technique would not be the same.

I like the comparison. Good video!
One thing I've heard is the big difference between foam (or other synthetic materials) and steel is that they behave very differently when the "blades" come into contact with each other. I don't spar, so have no personal experience with this. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on that aspect.

Edge to edge contact and edge to flat contact tests. RSW vs Steel.

What do they expect? Any kind of boffer isn't going to be exactly like a real blade or it will hurt the other person. Of course there is some difference in performance, but with a quality boffer the dynamic of operation can be very near a real blade.
It comes down to the old adage "you get what you pay for". Cheap trainers react like pool noodles, more expensive ones act closer to real swords.

Great video Lancelot! I love the side by side comparison, really shows your RSW handle identical to the sharp versions of the blades you made.

I've often wondered about your sparring swords.
